I watched the first one...

And I was surprised. My attention wandered a bit during the first half because they didn't invest me in the characters enough, but the end it was very solid. I usually expect the opposite from horror and paranormal, good build up that falls apart.

I admit, they got me when the girl was attacked in the canoe. I thought the film was over. I was actually frightened when that happened. I was enjoying her in the canoe touching the warped image of herself on the ripples like she was looking back at having come through a weird alternate reality. It was like she was out of danger, but still connected to what just happened. I was digging it as a visual metaphor and WHAM.

I knew there was something about Jason's mom in the films somewhere. I didn't realize that was the twist in this one until she showed up and I was like 'cool, this really works.'

Overall, I was impressed. I liked it.

Seeing the generator stuff I was like 'is this why there's that generator mechanic in Dead by Daylight'? Because that aspect of the game makes no sense to me. I've never played it, but I've watched it and if leaks are correct I will watch it more soon or maybe even try it.

I will probably watch the second one at a point. I have a feeling this is a series where there are good ones and bad ones and I should figure out which ones are worth watching.

The sad thing is that ages ago I had a fridge magnet with a sad Jason looking at a calendar that said "Friday the 12th". I didn't know what a Jason was, I was just like 'aww it's not friday the 13th and the creepy thing is sad about it'. People were like 'it's a Friday the 13th reference' and I was like 'yes?' but didn't get what they meant by that. I don't know what happened to it, but it's long gone now. I think I stopped having it out because one too many times someone was intense to me about it.

I'm glad you liked it!

The two twists - the one about it being his mom, and then the one at the end where it SEEMS like everything is okay and then she gets pulled down... they are really well done. It's a much better "the end... JUST KIDDING" twist than a lot of movies that attempt the same thing to much lesser effect.

The franchise as a whole is definitely pretty hit or miss, and I'm afraid I don't remember which ones were which. :/ I know "Jason X" is the deeply silly "Friday the 13th IN SPACE" one, but I don't remember the plots of the others individually.

That remains an impressive feat! There are so many movies that go for a shocking twist... and lack the buildup for it to make sense. A well-laid twist that still surprises me is one of THE most gratifying things in movies/books/games/etc. to me... but there are a lot that are either well-telegraphed to the point of not being a shock (which I often still enjoy even if I call it early, but miss the surprise nature) OR are a "shock" only because they're a total ass-pull.
