In the Fairbanks area of Alaska most of the tours I've looked at won't take a solo person. The ones that will are like heli-skiing or deliberately trying to get close to bears. I don't want to get close to bears. I want to stay away from the bears.

I really, really want to get out to those hot springs, tho. There is a road and I could theoretically rent a car, but the road is in bad shape. I am seeing multiple warnings that you should carry spare tires and be comfortable with changing them. My wrists are terrible. I cannot change tires and I will be waaaay out of cell range so no AAA for me. I want it so bad, but it's just a touch above my risk threshold. And my risk threshold is pretty high. I am careful, I plan well and I keep informed, but my trip plans tend to evoke 'you ... what? Alone?' type responses from people, including other hikers.

But driving on 160 miles of rough road, alone, out of cell range in an area where tours are cancelling due to 'changes in the local towns' is juuuuust a touch above my risk threshold.

So I don't know what I've be doing while up there. I might play things by ear. Due to difficulty of transportation, my trip is far more scheduled than my trips usually are. It might be nice to just show up in a place and explore, do what suits the weather, etc.
