Write a paragraph to a page (150-350 words) of narrative with no punctuation (and no paragraphs or other breaking devices).
Le Guin is very big on punctuation. This is meant as a lesson on it's role. I expected to hate this assignment, but I had an idea. She suggested writing about something hectic or being in apolitical revolution. Lack of punctuation shows a rush of ideas or emotion, like what a certain thrill seeker feels running off of a building.
Wait wait wait for the wind to stop for just one moment then run to the edge and past the edge and over the edge and down into the night full of stars but the stars are street lights and headlights and glinting reflections off of glass sided buildings then a sudden stop I am at the right floor the office looks like Hardison’s pictures that he showed me on his phone the book is on the far wall and Eliot has promised me that he will yell when this book is missing and show his ass his ass or at least his thigh Eliot was laughing about that and I didn’t ask why maybe I could have I assumed he was making a sex joke but the book doesn’t look like porn maybe the cover obscures the contents in more ways than one snick snick snick I cut the glass in a large oval and the oval falls to the ground below I stretch and hold tension along by body just so and carefully slowly enter the large office the security is disappointing there is not even a weight sensor on the book I wrap it in cloth and into the backpack it goes now a careful exit back out I test my line and slide down the ground with a wind and the world rushing by
Le Guin suggests coming back to this exercise in a week and maybe adding punctuation. Having the leap have no punctuation, have punctuation slowly come back in the office, only to disappear when she goes out the window would be an interesting idea and way to capture the rush of falling.
