Ever since things started coming into public domain again in the US I've been making Public Domain Day posts. I usually do them in
historium and crosspost here, but looks like that comm is pretty dead. I usually go through the full lists of everything entering domain to find some of the interesting niche things, but this year I am posting a mashable link. I am somewhat better, but going through the full lists and doing the usual process feels a bit overwhelming and wanted to make sure I got a post in.
This Jan 1 is going to be a spicy Public Domain Day! Orlando by Virginia Woolf, Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie, Dark Princess by W.E.B. DuBois, Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence, A. A. Milne's House at Pooh Corner The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall and lots of other recognizable stuff. Also, some films and songs, but...
The big, spicy one is Steamboat Willie which features the first appearance of Mickey Mouse and could somewhat weaken Disney's iron grip on their own mascot. People have speculated for years that 2024 wouldn't have a Public Domain day because they figured Disney would lobby to have copyright changed again. But, that didn't happen. Right now my money is that Disney has so much legal power that it isn't going to make a difference. Try to do anything with the mouse and Disney will file copyright, and if you fight it they will go 'ah, but your Steamboat Willie based design is too close to one of our still-protected later designs and if you are so into Steamboat Willie you've probably seen this other version'. Basically, I don't think anything will functionally change.
Usually, I need to do explainers for the interesting things coming into public domain, but this year is a banger. All Quiet On The Western Front is entering public domain in the original German only, all the translations are still copywritten. A few things have some caveats like that, but still, big year. Also, with both Orlando and Well of Loneliness, big year for landmark queer lit!
