Pride Season is upon us

Portland Pride isn't until next month, because we can't handle having Pride weekend on Juneteenth weekend like we used to, so it's been moved to July. But, most suburbs, bars, stores, smaller organizations are having Pride in June, some on June 1.

I don't feel like doing my usual navel gazing about Pride, because most of these events aren't really aimed at me anyway. Right now I plan on doing Wonderwood Springs Pride and maybe just that.

I don't really have a point except that Pride basically being a two month thing is a mixed bag and also deeply confusing at times. It being a decentralized mess does suit Portland, tho.

This is true, it is very, very on brand.

That decentralized nature certainly does sound very on-brand for Portland, but even with my mostly-positive feelings for Pride as a whole, having it scattered over two months' worth of different events sounds like it would be confusing and overwhelming and also do more to dilute it than prolong it.

'Portland Pride' is the name of Portland, Maine's event and is on the expected weekend. I've already seen people make incorrect travel plans due to that. Our event should be Pride PDX, since PDX is the standard 'other portland' signifier, but we have Pride Northwest, which most people assume is Seattle's.

If I was a better person I'd write a PDX Pride Guide. It's amazing the stuff most people don't even know about

Woof. Yeah, I can imagine that causing a lot of accidental confusion. Seems like there are definitely ways to minimize the confusion, but no one seems to be doing that! (I know most events are very resistant to renaming, but...)

I'm not surprised there's a lot that's poorly/minimally understood. I also don't blame you for not wanting to be the one to write the informative guide.

Calling this Portland by it's airport code has been a standard practice for clarity since at least the 90s. I've never heard anyone ever call it 'Pride Northwest', everyone just says/types Portland Pride, and if you look that up you get something else. The 2 Portlands thing is a very solved problem, but they managed to mess it up.

It's very annoying when there is a pretty easy, agreed-upon solution, and yet for some reason... Because yes, this is a solved problem! Why unsolve it?

Making things overly complicated, obscured and hard to get info about is very on brand for them.
