* A Heated Rivalry, an m/m romance about rival hockey players is becoming a TV show. It's going to be on Crave, so IDK if it'll be available in the US. Hockey based romance is huge, but not something I've read at all. I am kinda curious to check out the book since it's getting a show, but I am also drowning under my TBR list.

* The reveal trailer for Resident Evil 9 looks amazing.

It seems so weird that hockey romance (both the fully fictional and the RPF fandom types) is SO big! It feels like it should be super niche, but it's such a popular subgenre! Not one I've ever really explored, but periodically a mutual somewhere becomes devoted entirely to it, and I wind up with some proximal knowledge, ha. Interesting to have a TV adaptation!

Hockey RPF is huge. It shared an honor with Untamed fandom in that it's drama created changes in how Ao3 works and why you can toggle accepting gifts. I am aware that it's massive and what some of the dramas are. I have no interest in getting into it, but I am going to read the book

Hockey RPF really does have that juggernaut presence. (Though I was not aware that it was the culprit behind the toggle for gift fics! I'm not surprised, though.) I feel like it's absorbed at least four or five people I'd followed for wildly different fandoms. I can't say it holds much appeal for me (other than, I guess, the whole "if I *was* into this, I'd basically have infinite stuff to read,) but I may also have to give the book a read!

Used to be you could turn off comments, but people could always 'gift' you stuff. Some people even wrote stories that seemed to be gift, and then turned on a dime to try to trigger / upset the author in question. This was before AI, these fics were artisanally crafted abuse deployment systems. Imagine doing all that work! It was effective because people get caught up in stories and that was really messing with people.

Heated Rivalry was really good. I am probably not going to read hockey fic outside of this series, tho

I remember the days of being unable to disable gifting, and I knew that it was changed due to people using it as a harassment vector. I did not realize that Hockey RPF was the fandom that created the need for the change!

(It baffles me that people will put that much effort into just being an asshole. It doesn't surprise me, because people, but man... I can't imagine using my finite energy and time on that.)

I'm glad it was good! I might give it a try at some point. (I feel like it would unlock a good portion of the AO3 map if I could be into hockey RPF, and would certainly let me understand a few fandom acquaintances who've moved from whatever our shared fandom was to hockey RPF... but I just don't think I can do it. Same as Kpop.)

Putting so much effort into hate? I will never understand and I am glad. Ugh, wasting energy on that seems insane. Hockey RPF and Untamed, two fandoms that share the dubious honor of creating change at AO3.

I have no intention of reading hockey RPF directly, but if I read more hockey romances some of those will be fics with the serial numbers filed off. Whatever fandom Heated Rivalry has I am going to be in, though. I think *think* this particular series started at RPF. It doesn't feel like it was RPF and I think if it did start that way I'd have seen a reference to that by now.

I'm with you: I'm glad I don't understand the mentality that goes into putting that much effort into making someone else unhappy.

There should be a tongue-in-cheek hall of fame for fandoms that forced site-wide policy changes, haha.

Also a fair point. I'm sure there's quite a bit of serial-numbers-filed-off RPF out there as self-pub works. I know so little about any actual hockey anything, I'd never notice even if was blatantly obvious to those in the know, haha. (Though yes, I'm sure if Heated Rivalry had started life as RPF, someone would have been talking about that!)
