* I've decided to become an ice hockey fan. I know nothing about my regional team other than they are named for a cryptid and their assistant coach is the first female coach in the NHL. I am not sure I need to know more. I have been a die hard Kraken fan for 5 whole days now, just don't ask me to name a single player.

Oh, but I did learn that the team names used in Rachel Reid books are not the actual team names.

Seattle is also currently forming a women's team, so I've got that to follow and be confused by.

I know a bit about hockey, though not much about the Kraken. my team's the Washington Capitals

published hockey romances tend not to use actual team names, as they want to avoid the possibility of those pesky lawsuits

I am jazzed that Seattle's getting a women's team - sadly as with all women's sports, they're criminally underpaid compared to their male counterparts, but they are just as skilled. I think there are a few minor differences in play, but the most noticeable difference to me is that women wear full-cage masks on their helmets

The Kraken collect rainwater and filters it and uses that to make their ice rink! How cool is that.

My local hockey team has had a few very successful seasons (but I don't think the most recent one was) and they're a fairly big deal.

I have been to one game ever, which was fairly fun, but I do not understand much about it to follow. (Though I had coworkers whose kids were nationally competitive at the high school level.)

Your team does have the coolest name, though.

Colorado seems to be moderately hockey-focused. Not inescapably, but fairly steadily. (Though same re: high school and college. College especially. Our only sports claim to fame was an even that made it to either the Daily Show or the Colbert Report: a second-string football player stabbing the first-stringer. This shockingly did not result in the second-string player getting to start.)

But it's nice to have some knowledge of how stuff works on the ice! I imagine that helps a bit, even if you don't yet know all the specifics of hockey rules.

It really is a great logo, too.

At least the stabbing did not happen during play! I can't remember if it was in the locker room or somewhere off campus... My brain insists locker room, but that just seems over the top. Then again... second-stringer stabbing first-stringer is already very over the top, so.

Oh man! The Dallas Stars (My Team by virtue of living in TX) just traded Mason Marchment up there. He is known for having SPECTACULAR blue eyes, terrible facial hair, and taking a lot of stupid penalties! I'm bummed he's gone. Have fun with him!

We started taking learn-to-hockey-skate classes in March and I just took my first learn-to-play class this weekend, and I need improvement on EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE SKILL but it's been a ton of fun. Do recommend.
