Earlier today I decided to gently, carefully, with references, talk to some people in my local discord - as in, these are people I know IRL - that ConformityGate is not real. It's easy to debunk ConformityGate because some of their 'proof' are claims that certain things happened on the show, but those things did not happen. You can just screepcap or clip and 'no, that is not what happened, they literally made shit up, here is what actually happened.'
If you have remained blissfully unaware, it's Byler Truther bullshit. Unhinged Stranger Things fans who learned nothing from being humiliated in Scriptgate.
Don't ask me what Scriptgate is, because I will explain and you will take 1d4 psychic damage
Now, it's being covered by MoistCr1TiKaL, a very prominent youtuber. 17.6 million subscribers. Their collective meltdown is big enough to be covered by Charlie of all people. jfc....

Date: 2026-01-07 03:50 am (UTC)From:Most of what I have glimpsed of the Byler truther stuff is just... sad. I'm so sorry for everyone experiencing baby's first "my ship wasn't canon", but unleashing wildly unhinged conspiracy takes about it is just... not how to handle that. Go write some fic or make some amvs (are those called "fanedits" now, and for non-anime sources?) Though I haven't seen many of the specifics of what they're claiming, beyond "it was always meant to be canon and that nothing else makes sense so there's some nebulous ~something~ that prevented it."
It is giving "secret good Sherlock episode" in the parts that I have seen looming.
Scriptgate rings a bell. It's possible I took the psychic damage already and simply blocked it off.

Date: 2026-01-07 10:49 pm (UTC)From:Some of the fandom was in Sherlock and kinda wanted the bonding experience of being 'us against the world' again. They were doing a deliberate visibility campaign for their claims in hopes of roping in people, and it worked. I mean, the idea that there is a Big Secret to decode is a compelling one. People in my local bookish discord Wanted To Believe.
I think I've at least vagued about Scriptgate before, but I wish I didn't even know about it
