How did I not realize the the writer of Off Campus is a co-author of Him? (the hockey romance, not the football horror) The books in the Him series are some of the most recc'd m/m hockey romance books, so I assumed the MC's shitty attitudes towards women were going to be something they moved past, not just a feature of the book.
Off Campus is a M/F hockey romance book series, and the TV show based on it just dropped
One thing I struggled with in Him is that the guys felt like the least realistic men I've ever read in m/m romance. They are like parodies of mid '00s CW characters, covered in sick tribal tatts, bro. I keep doing double takes at the publication dates of both Him and Off Campus considering the tropes, trends, music, styles of dress, the slang. The slang is amazingly dated.
I DNF'd Him pretty hard and then people were surprised that I'd managed to stick it out that long. I do not get why it's such a common recc in m/m romance. Legit reminds me of early SPN fic in very bad ways, which, well, that might be the draw. It was a huge fandom and some people probably miss those vibes. Honestly, the book reads like it's an orig fic project by former SPN ficcers.
Anyway for Off Campus I would like an edit of all the sexy hockey player dressing, undressing and showering and nothing else. I didn't make it far into the show. Almost everything I disliked about it are things common in rom coms. The whole genre is just deeply not for me.
