Feb. 1st, 2021 01:55 pmThere is going to be a sequel to The Social Network called The Antisocial Network about r/wallstreetbets. I'm not kidding.
I just wasted part of my afternoon trying to confirm that RoaringKitty AKA DeepF***ingValue with his stereotypical redditor look and cat T-shirts who works from 'a dim basement' is the same person as a clean cut multi-millionaire. Same face, name, work history ... Could the aesthetic just be there to appeal to redditor expectations and make them feel seen and like they are just like him?? Hashtag relatable? Right now some actual news orgs are trying to get full confirmation so I wont state they are the same person, but if they ain't that is one heck of a coincidence. In any case better to wait a few days and work on my writing projects instead of that.
No real reason for me pursue this, if they are the same person it is going to come out that this was a scam to drive up stock prices he had a position in to make obscene amounts of money. The two biggest things to came out of reddit both involved game distribution, so GME was a very calculated pick. Redditors and their feelings about video game distribution should never be underestimated.
I know some people who bought late and think they are crashing the market or hurting billionaires. I know someone who was homeless for part of his life who is throwing money at this to 'hold the line' and bankrupt the billionaires. I'm just sitting here like 'that's not how this works, that's now how any of this works'. But a lot of people don't understand market basics and I have so so long that I forget it was a knowledge base that I learned and not intuitive. It's ironic because a lot of gamers find gaming and how to manipulate and avatar in a 3d space and a separate camera intuitive, when that is a complex skill that usually take a year to acquire. Vet gamers throw shade at newbs because they don't get that video game movement is actually hard, they've forgotten what it was like to learn and think it's intuitive.
Anyway, time to turn my head away from this for a while. I don't need to research this. I have better things to do with my time.
