I've joined a local photo club and it's surprisingly awesome so far. I am hopefully part of a group that will be part of a physical gallery show, just need to jump through some hoops. Sadly, one of those hoops is my sub-group meeting and one of the people keeps needed to cancel because she's decided to fly to the Faroe Islands on a whim or is driving to Utah. Nothing I can do. I've made my attempt to herd this group of cats, but one keeps flying aways. That metaphor totally works.
Amusingly, being a landscape shooter I've been asked a few times for my 'secret' shooting locations. I don't have secret ones? People are so obsessed with the idea that landscape shooters, and long term Oregonians in general, know hidden places. It's ... not a thing? Landscape shooting is about composition, understanding depth markers, managing that camera sensors see farther into the UV range that human eyes, etc. I am just always baffled when people think my stuff is good because of 'one weird trick' or 'Oregonian secrets' rather than ... practice and study?
Keeping the location a secret for abandoned places is a thing, as I've written about. But yeah, my landscape shots are clearly labeled. When I title a gallery Odell Lake in Oregon it's pictures of Odell Lake in Oregon.
Accessibility of these locations is a thing, for reasons ranging from health status to money. (See above about the person in my group taking off to the Faroe Islands on a whim) There are places I can get to that others can't, and places I will never be able to get to myself. A number of pros shoot most of their work roadside. Some of my shots are roadside. Actually, referring my Odell Lake gallery was a good pick because most of those pictures are on or near a paved road or path. I did some serious hiking there, but all the pictures that made the cut for my final gallery were close to the lodge or taken from Route 58. There are barriers to these places, but it's not Secrets of the Order.
Anyway, it's one thing when random people think my shots are the results of having access to some Oregonian Insider Secret Menu. Hearing it from other photographers is super weird to me. I guess I should be flattered that they think I am using some hidden network to find Crater Lake?
I need to figure out what gallery I can have done for publishing next week. I am working on a bunch, but only have a few shots here and there.
