The Gorillaz fully hand drawn animated short film for their new album has been out for a minute, but it's still really cool.
I am the worst Gorillaz fan. I used to listen to their debut album on repeat back when I owned physical media. Some of their other songs were among my favorite songs, but I don't think I've like listened to anything by them except in passing in ages. Also, I know 0% of the lore. Every time someone tried to explain to me about the band not being real or what the character names are I was like "I'm sorry for you or glad that happened, whichever"
I need to listen to them more and actually note the titles of some of my favorite songs. I used to listen to them on mixes and didn't really know the titles, they just came in a certain rotation.
They've got a streaming channel up of their videos and live performances and seeing what the lead singer looks like was a surprise. Also, he really does sing into like a... what do you call it? It's like a CB radio handheld thingie. Like what a trucker talks into when talking to other truckers. Also, fuck, they have worked with an insane roster of talent over the years. Even Bad Bunny? Like, how did they snag so many hype collabs? Are the Gorillaz way bigger of a deal than I think they are?

Date: 2026-03-19 02:52 am (UTC)From:For me it was the second album that I listened to on repeat, after initially bouncing off the first when it came out, but then I went back to the first one and it suddenly all worked for me. I also listened to a handful of the songs from Plastic Beach a LOT at one of my old jobs, but it was very much a playlist of just some favorites. I also really loved a handful of songs off of Humanz that made it into fairly constant rotation for me, but then haven't listened to anything since then. (And woof, that was 2017??)
The roster of features and collabs they've gotten is really impressive. I'd say they're moderately a big deal? Idk how much is Damon Albarn's previous success and connections from Blur, or how much came later, or whether it just started because of that and has since built more over the course of the Gorillaz?
One time I decided that I was going to get into and figure out all of the Lore. I... kind of tried. I still know the very basics of the characters, but could not really commit to learning the whole ongoing storyline, ha.
I haven't watched the new film, but definitely need to!

Date: 2026-03-19 03:39 am (UTC)From:I think I, uh, really loved some Gorrilaz songs without even realizing it was them because the songs were just on very long mp3 mixes.
I had no idea about the Blur connection, or the Tank Girl connection. My brain just turns off when it comes to what the band is about. But seeing the singer sing was... interesting. He looks very much like '3rd pub patron from the left' on a BBC show from the 90s. Also, finding out that some sounds on certain songs are from a recorder? Honestly, the mix of things and sounds that go into making the songs is something I am very into. As a music project, it's fascinating.
I don't think I've actively listened to them since maybe 2009, but I should.

Lol, true. He does kind of have that "could be an extra that you didn't realize you've seen a hundred times until you check imdb" look, haha.
It really is a fascinating project! I should listen to some newer stuff by them, for sure.
