I've been trying to get into watercolors to prepare for Mermay. This has mostly consisted of me going to art supply stores, deciding that nothing they have is what I want and then buying some pens and markers.

One art supply store had Posca pens really cheap, less then half of what I usually see them for. I caved and bought a few. I doubt I will use them in a finished piece but wow, they do what they say on the tin. The light colors, even black, are opaque and even enough that they can go over line art and even black posca.

Example:

I tried each with a quick line then a slow line, to see the coverage difference between a small amount of medium and a thicker layer. Except for the silver, there isn't much difference.

They are fun. They can also be used to rescue traditional art that has been damaged by a pen bleeding or by really snarfing up the inking. Literally the day before I bought these pens I dumped a bunch of my loose sketches and wips. One was a drawing that got destroyed by a marker bleeding and the posca could have saved it. Ah, well.

Anyway, I was so happy at first thinking that my Mermay stuff this year would be so much better than last years. Then I looked at last year's drawings. They are ... pretty good. My marker blending has improved, but has my anatomy?

We'll have to see if I can do better this year.
