Based on the description, promo and dim memories of how people reacted when the comic first came out years ago, I didn't think I'd like it. I watched the pilot anyway, because sometimes promos do a very bad job of representing a show.

I loved it. It was tropey as hell. The opening lines were some of the most said lines in genre fiction ever. I called most of the plot in the first episode.

But it was well done and a lot of fun. Predictability isn't always bad. That I called a number of things about Leonard Peabody as soon as he was on screen means that he was well acted, his psychology realistically written and well portrayed.

Klaus was is usually the sort of character that I have no patience of sympathy for, but he was great.

Songs playing over scenes, both fight scenes and other scenes, was great. I love the choices of music in the show. I mean, they used a They Might Be Giants song.

The show uses a few tropes I am not fond of, including a trope that is my pet peeve. But it's fun and the characters feel very realistic. It's very characters first. The plot doesn't run rough-shod over the characters ... yet. We'll see how season 2 goes and if they can keep it up. Based on chatter I've seen about the show, and the limited number of comics that came out, I don't know if there is an ending yet or not. We'll have to see how it shakes out.

The last show where I really fell in love with the characters and how they were character-first went and wrote itself into a corner. They solved it by having a character be very OOC to solve the problem. While I loved Umbrella Academy, I am a bit worried it'll fall apart in future seasons and that'll likely keep me from getting too into it.
