Ever wake up and start checking articles to see if the nazi furry who did a mass shooting in your town is the one from the con scene that you tried, and failed, to raise alarms about?

Everyone was always 'what? but he's a furry. lol.' Like furrys are tame, shy little chibis who never try to... idk... release chlorine gas.

Anyway, seems to be a different nazi furry who opened fire on protesters.

But at least furries care about policing their communities and enforcing standards. A lot of online communities are way too tolerant of intolerance. When I'm at home I check social media way too often. But when I am out I don't. It was a weird day to be out of the news loop. I was just starting to check up while I was having a bite to eat around 8 or so. I am exhausted so I haven't fully been able to make sense of things.

And I have nothing more coherent to say. I am about to crash.

wow, I'd not come across that bit of info - but I've not really been looking more in-depth about the shooter's background.

He was a big Andy Ngo fan, which is the least surprising thing you'll hear today. Some other things need more confirmation, but yeah, some communities might have having talks soon about tolerating certain things in their spaces.

The furry community is generally pretty good (on the whole) at trying to keep the worst out of their communities. But I do hate the "please, he's a furry" kind of attitude - there are beyond enough furries for there to be inevitable crossover with all sorts of genuinely horrible people, because that's how it works.

Even so, I hate that there are enough nazi furries that this could be a different one than the one you would have been concerned about.

Yeah, there is a real long-standing problem of people not ejecting bad actors or having standards in online communities and also in offline geek communities. It's like the furries, punks and metal heads who at least take it seriously.

Right? I appreciate the groups that are willing to get rid of the assholes. (And yeah, too many "outcast" groups - geeks, nerds, goths, etc. - wind up excusing way too much bad behavior so as not to be exclusionary. But some people, based on their *behavior* not identity, deserve to be excluded, and have to be in order for the group not to suffer for it.)

Yuuuup. I've dealt with that too much. When geek spaces refuse to have boundaries, anyone who has any other social spaces tends to GT the FO. So the space just gets worse and worse.

It's like the whole "nazi bar" analogy. You let one asshole/nazi stay because it doesn't seem right to kick them out, and then the other assholes/nazis show up, and pretty soon no one else wants to be there.
Of course with nazi furries, it's less of an analogy and more... exactly the scenario.
