I've watched the first few episodes of Paper Girls, which is an Amazon Original. It's based on either a book or comic series appears to be completed, so the show should have direction and a plan? I am not double checking this because I am avoiding spoilers.
I think I've seen the book on recc lists and dismissed it as YA. It does involve twelve year old girls and it's sci fi, but it doesn't have the heavy handed didactic nuance-less crap that most YA has. The plot doesn't talk down to the characters or the audience. At least so far! We'll see how it goes. I have liked a series at the start and then eaten my words.
The journey of the girls is told and shot very well. The uniforms of the baddies and some of the Sci Fi elements look like they fell out of a mid-90s genre show. I *think* this may be intentional. I think it's the show signaling us that 'this is just plot device, don't focus on this'. That said, the time travel so far is way more solid than in most time travel shows.
I could be wrong... But in one of the early shots those white things they are wearing are just so bad. I hope it was intentional. It's super at odds with literally everything else about the production quality of the show.
