Mar. 1st, 2024 01:12 pm* Should I, after all these long years, actually read or watch Twilight? I had no interest back in the day. Honestly, everything about the popular genre books and shows were alienating to me and I didn't touch them, vamp and woofie stuff alike. But so many were into it that it's shaped the current genre landscape in ways I don't get. Princess Weekes has a video I've only just started on the current boom of media created by people who were into it and how some of them are replicating, not deconstructing, the problematic bits.
Honestly, I don't think I could read Twilight because I'd yeet the book across the room for one reason or another.
I was never anti-Twilight back in the day. I found it creepy that people liked to rubberneck females being into a horny book and make fun of female Twilight fans of every age for different reasons. Some were obsessed with women in their 30s reading a book with sex like it was the most aberrant culture event ever. 50 Shades, however, I hated hearing about so much that I mass unfollowed people, learned keyword blockers, etc. I am NOT kidding when I say I was sick of the drama before chapter 2 of Master of the Universe came out... She played fandom like a fiddle. Everyone took the rage bait. I was not really disgusted with the fic, I was disgusted with everyone being the coyote from the roadrunner cartoons and running headlong into obvious traps. Some I think even took the bait for fun, something to have drama about. She played fandom for engagement and got rich off of it. 50 Shades went from cluttering my flist to having make up lines from the brand I used! Yes, you too can look weirdly greyed out and yet flushed! Sadly, keyword blockers don't work offline. I literally haven't bought a single product from MFE to this day after the did that 50SoG line.
So on one hand I am very into consuming media just to catch references, see where tropes and trends started, etc... so it's making me want to read Twilight and maybe try again to watch True Blood but also, ugh, True Blood is on HBO... It's just weird to me to have consumed so much that is about, referencing, etc not just Twilight but the popular media of that era and not know it firsthand.
* It has been a while since I posted about AI, unless you count the Willy Chocolate Experience which is a wonderful example of AI bro mindset crashing into reality. And there is a roughly 100% chance that I am going to randomly post about one of the local con fails in Portland sometime in the near future. But anyway, ( talk about AI data centers taking already scarce drinking water in the US under the cut )
