Truckee Train Trip Day 1
Dec. 13th, 2024 10:56 amThe Metro Lounge in Portland is really nice! I've never been in it before.
I think it was under renovations when I did the Coast Starlight back in... 2017? I was surprised. It's very nice, all modern furniture with those large vintage windows giving views of the train. I almost missed the lounge because I didn't realize we had a nice one.
The Willamette Valley was having a stagnant air event while I left, which meant that all the woodsmoke gets trapped in the valley. No wildfires were affecting us but the AQ was bad with a lot of woodfire smoke mixing with fog. The farther down we get into the valley, the worse the wait got. But, it was pretty.
The train was oversold so passengers without seats crowded the observation car, so I couldn’t camp out in there like I usually do. I just stayed in my first floor roommette. I've rarely been put on the first floor and never for a trip of any length.
It was lovely, but also it got dark soon because it's December. One reason I'd always planned on a fall trip was to have more daylight.
