Netflix has been promoting it's Fyre Festival doc. A few days beforehand Hulu's doc came out and they were all 'Guess what? The Netflix one is made in cooperation with the PR team from Fyre Festival, Jerry Media. Here is ours, watch it now.'
Ironically, Hulu used savvy social media PR to get their doc to get tons of attention for free, piggy backing off of Netflix's paid ads. I saw lots of ads for the Netflix version, but watch Hulu's went I saw why it was trending. I have not seen the Netflix one, but I have got to say that the Hulu one is very well made. Good graphics, they covered lots of angles and did good analysis.
Being a logistics nerd who used to run conventions and events, my middle fingers got a work out. My favorite detail from all of this has to do with the first attempt to get people off of the island. A whole bunch of people got on the plane, but since the headcount didn't match the manifest they wasted a bunch of time making sure only the right people were on. Being an international flight, this is important. You can't land in another country with an incorrect passenger list or unknown people aboard. This took so long that the flight was cancelled because the crew had now worked too many hours and were no longer able to work the flight itself. It sounds like a Cabin Pressure crossover!
The main jerk behind everything? I dealt with ineffective versions of him on the con scene all the time. Well, I know some people who lost money on failed cons and one girl who wound up with massive debt so maybe I will go with 'less effective versions'. Man, they were such pains in my butt. I feel for the one guy who posted proof that the festival was impossible because I literally have been there. Way smaller scale, but yeah.
I like how much FOMO was covered because it is such a driving force in our society and why people buy into really dangerous things. Dangerous in many ways. Why do people cling to Facebook despite the very real havoc it has caused? FOMO. Anyway, I highly recommend it.
And now I get to watch all those shows on the other side of the streaming divide. I've heard good things about Runaways. A lot of these shows I haven't even heard of.
