Even though the Steam Powered Giraffe show isn't until May, I am already trying to figure out how to make sure my pictures are better this time. I posted a ramble over on [community profile] photographyon about editing concert photos.

The problem is that I can't do a dry run to test the conditions. The main problem is that some of the band's facepaint is not just metallic, but actually reflective. That means a lot of usual things you do got concert photography (center or focus weighted balancing, trusting AF tracking) just do not work good.

When I go to an event I like to make sure that I only spend a small amount of it shooting. The more comfortable and prepared I am, the less I'll be thinking about photography during the show. I want good shots, but I also want to only paying attention to the band for at least 90% of the show.

I wish I could get into the venue to help me decide if I should use my 50mm equiv prime again or switch to my new, shiny 90mm equiv prime. The 90mm equiv is a much, much better less and can shoot a shallower depth of field. My cheap refurb 50mm is smaller and lets me have very nice full body shots.

I may actually be able to scope the venue, or maybe I am find other live show photoshoots from the venue.
