I've always been salty about how that show went off the rails. Season 1 was like everything a lot of people in fandom had been asking for just suddenly being gifted to us, with a side order of Clancy Brown in a very ironic role. And then, yeah ...

Today an article from Nicole Beharie come out talking about the behind the scenes on that and the situation was worse than I thought. I thought it was just studio fuckery trying to turn the show into something it was. The article in question.

For me, six years ago I was on a TV show. My co-star and I both got sick at the same time with the same illness and had different treatments. He was allowed to go on leave for a month and I had to continue working. There was a smokescreen of me getting my own episode titled “Mama.” By the end of that episode, I started to fall apart.

They shut down production for two weeks because I got sick. They sent in lots of doctors, and I had daily checkups to make sure I was actually sick because they had to get the production going. Every doctor said I wasn’t doing well and that I needed to rest. That is not what they wanted to hear.

Months ensued and I got a lawyer. I got my hours down and worked through it. But then I developed an autoimmune condition. I had C. difficile [a bacterium that causes a range of symptoms], which had me on eight different prescription medications.

What the actual fuck?

My salty feeling towards the show have been replaced by anger at how she was treated.

That show was so good and then… ugh.

Season one had so much potential. And I was still making excuses for it even when others noticed it was starting to go off the rails. I was in total denial right up until they killed off Nicole Beharie's character.

IIRC it was Orlando Jones' character suddenly doing stuff against the basic concept of his character that was just too much for me. I knew it had gone screwy, but I had hope it would get back on track. I wanted it to so badly!

I'd have to go back and watch it again to find the moment, but I am not going to watch that show again. I am not going to support it in any way. Tho some fix it fanfics would be great.

I knew there was bad shady stuff going on but not to that extent. Fuck that. Wow.

It was a great show for five minutes. And Nicole Beharie is amazing.

Wow, that's horrifying. I used to love that show. Thanks for the link, im glad to know the real story. Tho now im angry all over again about the corrections paragraph at the end -- wtf, how hard is it for a journalist not to badly misquote someone three times in the course of a short article??

I loved the show at the start and this certainly justified the 'this has gone seriously wrong' reactions I had to it as it went along.

It's insane. I feel like I should be more mad, but I don't even have the energy at this point.

I read that article, and was SO FURIOUS by the end of it.

I loved the first season of Sleepy Hollow (and its side helping of Clancy Brown!) and Nicole Beharie was so wonderful in it. Second season was increasingly infuriating, and I'd dropped it completely by third season. Which I was very happy about when I heard they'd killed Abby. But to find out it wasn't just sidelining of the Black characters racism going on, but seriously blatant racism and misogyny against the actor made it all so much worse. Grrrr.

I was so mad at the show undercutting it's themes. On one hand, I feel like my anger was very valid. On the other, that issue pales in comparison to treating an actor that way. How dare they treat anyone that way, much less a lead.
