I watched the pilot last night!
It's really good so far! I haven't read the book, I am just following the show for now. I might pick up the book later on.
The show characters talk about fiction and liking characters or genres with racist origins. These are themes being set up for talking about racist origins and pasts in general. I am pretty sure I could say 'But really, they are talking about America'. They are on some level, but the story is very family and character centered right now.
I love that some of the characters are working on The Green Book, the travel guides African Americans used to use to know how to travel safely via car. The book is more known about these days because of that The Green Book film, which apparently that was not a great film.
The show is not subtle about symbolism. I mean, you've got Jackie Robinson destroying monsters in the opening dream sequence. But also, in the waking world the monsters are scary and feel very immediate. The show doesn't take on a dreamy magical realism tone.
So far the show is doing both. Yes, lots of symbolism, but also very solid, visceral and character focused.
