I've made a number of bets over the years about whether the UK was going to take Charles being King calmly and whether it might have an effect on the legitimacy of the monarchy. Time to see what happens.

As a logistics geek I've read up on the London Bridge is Down protocol. Despite many 'Queen is secretly dead' freak outs on social media over the past few years, last night as I was going to bed was the first time I saw the actual death protocols actually possibly going into effect, so I wasn't surprised by the news this morning. I was a bit tempted to stay up and watch... but also I walked 8 or 9 miles yesterday so I faceplanted.

It'll be interesting to see how it continues to play out, and what the aftermath really winds up being, especially as it relates to the monarchy as a whole.

Some UK residents are ok with the monarchy as long as it's not Charles. Every Brit I've known (which is a lot, I was there for a year and also my Dad's job had him pretty much living there for a while) was pretty much on the copium saying that Charles would either die first or he'd have 'the good taste' to bow out in favor of his eldest kid.

Obviously, the people I've known are just the people I've known... but none of them are okay with what's about to happen.

Yeah, there's a LOT of animosity toward him that isn't extended to the monarchy as a whole, and it seems like that could absolutely tip more people over into the "ah, maybe this isn't the best system of government after all" camp.

I know people have chilled a lot towards Camilla over the years, but I am very curious how much all this is opening old wounds versus people just wanting to not care with everything else going on.

Almost none of her subjects could even remember a time when she wasn't in charge. She seemed like an unchanging fact of life, but now she's gone. I don't know if anything is going to come of it, but that's got to have some people questioning things.

Yeah, I can see this bringing some old resentments back to prominence, especially when there are a lot of emotions already running high.

It really is impressive (whether you think it's good or bad, impressive) that she had such a long, continuous rule. Her presence WAS a fact of life for so long, and it's a very big change. Again, regardless of personal feelings tied up with it, it's a big deal.
