* I rewatched the documentary Rewind This!, which is about the VHS boom, video rental stores and also bootlegging/piracy. I wanted to get some notes for a fic that involves movie buffs Steve and Robin knowing about that scene, especially since it's highly unlikely Robin could legally access the films she refers to as her faves. There are a lot of ins and out to this, but there was no major home video release of any 3 films in the US at the time. It's not impossible she saw the films legally at some art house theater, despite not driving and being poor and living in rural Indiana 6 hours from Chicago. (I often write Hawkins as 3 hours away to simplify things, but canonically it's more east) But add all the factors up and she most likely 'acquired them'.
I had to track down a place to watch because afaik there's been no physical release of Rewind This! and it's streaming rights keep changing. It screened at tons of film festivals and SXSW, and was well received, but is hard to get or keep ahold of...which is deeply ironic.
Anyway, this is the second time recently I've gone hey, based on who has the rights this should be in a streaming package I already have, but it's not. I had to stream it with ads on Pluto. I don't mind a few ads to see an obscure doc I want to see, but the player stopped letting me pause after a while and I was watching it to take notes!
Pluto is free and didn't even require an account, so I do recc Rewind This! if that sounds at all interesting to you. They interview both English and Japanese speakers for this which is interesting.
* I also picked up a book on regional horror, because a lot of indie horror and it's distribution was very small and regional at the time, to put in details that I could have made up and no one would know the difference.
