I am back from Neskowin and I'm trying to figure out if the low tides I was out for were just nothing like the 2019 ones or if a lot of what I saw back then is just gone. I honestly just don't know. I checked the tide tables myself for the whole year before heading out. I didn't expect 2019 levels of view, but I did expect more. You'd like a weird two thousand year old natural phenomena that looks like this (one of my 2019 pics):

Would be better documented, like if it was fading fast there'd be a news story. I just can't find great info on it. Maybe that 2019 window I was out for was more special than I even realized.

Anyway, I shot what I could see and spent more time shooting Proposal Rock.

I am stuck between two thoughts. One is that if it is a case of I need an even lower tide, I want to make sure I catch it. Two is that I've been in Oregon a long time and most of the time I've been at the coast has been at Neskowin, and there's not a lot in Neskowin. You also can't easily get to anywhere. I should also go to other places. I have been to Canon Beach, Astoria and Lincoln City, but that was back in the days I was still shooting film. It's been a long time. I was supposed to revisit Astoria on my way back from finally seeing Puget Sound, but that was the trip that I somehow got a viral tummy thing from a bad water source and had to cut my trip short due to getting extremely sick. (Why do I travel again? That was really bad, and also weird to get in a first world country)

I am going to Garibaldi on the coast next month for a very silly reason, so I am going to see one more bit of the coast at least.

But, still, I got out of the heat and had highs in the low 60s. Oregon beaches: cold winds, wet coarse sand full of strange vegetation and man, that view:

(My room's 'porch' was so small I could barely get my feet in the shot.)

I will post my other pics and more about the trip soon. It was still good to go, I just wish I could figure out if it's A, B or a mix of both as to why it was so different.

I'm glad you got to go and that it was a good trip!

I have a lot of fondness for the Oregon coast, even if it's very much not what most people think of when they think "beach vacation." It's been a long time since I spent much time there; my grandmother's 90th birthday six and a half years ago was the last time, and Taylor and I went to the beach one day for just an hour or so that we could grab between other things... but it was January, so it's not like it was prime beach time! (It was also during the government shutdowns, so we couldn't go to the lighthouse, because it's a park property. :( ) I think the last time we went up there in the summer was when I was in high school.

BUT. That sounds very strange about site looking so different. Like, I hope it's not due to any manmade destruction... but I would expect that "hey, this cool thing is vanishing" would get some attention! Then again, there are a lot of things I'd expect to be documented that just... aren't. I'm glad you got to see it in 2019, and that you got to see it again now, even if it was different than anticipated.

Yeah... it's definitely not the "beach vacation" most people are picturing.

There was definitely some fog when we went out for our walk on the beach!

It sucks when places do get impacted by tourism in such a negative way. People not taking care, trying to touch/climb/chip pieces off of things for souvenirs...
