Wolf At The Door - I'd been so confused by Wolf at the Door being considered such a popular book in m/m circles. I thought I'd hard DNF'd it due to a harsh interrogation scene and other dark themes. Turns out, I'd confused it with a *different* werewolf murder mystery in a rural area. In my defense, the other book opens with a long walk up a muddy trail and the cover art for Wolf at the Door is muddy ground.

I'm glad one of my book clubs picked it. I'd planned on just pushing through to see what the fuss was about and also discuss the book.

I really liked it. The mystery aspect was way better than in most mystery plots I read. I am not as taken by it as some other people are, but I will continue the series. I have a feeling, considering the buzz over the books, that it either improves as it goes on or just spending more time with the characters means getting more attached to them. Also, it's nice to get into another of the popular series... instead of being confused AF

Winter's Orbit - I felt a bit bad switching this book to 'read' on my LibraryThing. I skimmed a lot after a while. A lot about the book makes more sense if you basically consider it an early Trek novel. The aesthetics, the way space-faring tech does and doesn't work, etc, all sort of clicks if you just decide that this came directly out of TOS Kirk/Spock fandom. Also, the bear thing. The way fandom embraced the joke about how bears are on Vulcan, you cannot tell me that the flora and fauna being exactly like Earth's and then that weird deadly bear doesn't come out of early Trek fandom's love of the whole Vulcan bear thing. This is so TOS-fandom coded. Still, I didn't really click with it.

Why, books with the same title??

I do have the horror novel Wolf at the Door (assuming that's the one you mean, by Nat Cassidy) on my TBR to get to eventually. I liked Mary pretty well by the same author, but definitely pretty intense and dark, and not something I'd rec outside of someone looking for horror.

But I did have a copy of a short story/fairy tale retelling collection (YA, or maybe just kids) called The Wolf at the Door, and Amazon kept chucking a completely different A Wolf at the Door (which I think was some romantasy thing, idk) at me as a suggestion a couple weeks ago.

I wouldn't have even known that there was a m/m book also called Wolf at the Door, but I'm glad that you did discover it's a different book, and that you enjoyed it!

I think Winter's Orbit is also somewhere on the TBR, after a $1.99 ebook sale came up. I think. But I swear I remember hearing that it was Star Wars StormPilot fic with the serial numbers filed off, so it's funny to hear that it seems to actually be TOS fic, lol.

I mean Wolf At The Door by Charlie Adhara! I should have put in the author's name. DW isn't letting me edit right now, maybe that bit code push has started. The Adhara series is a big deal on the MM Romance subreddit and most places I see m/m books talked about. I'd been side-eyeing those spaces a lot. This is a paranormal romance series, and I think that's considered a romantasy sub-genre now.

The book I mistook it for was also a m/m book, one with a very similar premise.

A few people in my online book club all got old-school TOS vibes from it, and one person enjoyed it by assuming it was meant to be K/S. It's possible we are wrong. The bear thing feels so specific to Trek fandom. I'll need to look into this a bit, now I am curious

Going to double reply instead of edit since DW is possible wonky right now. Turns out it started in the WIPs threads over on Fail Fandom Anon back in 2016. Looks to have been original from the start, but maybe still came from a TOS fan.
