Wonderwood Springs Renn Fest Event
Jul. 6th, 2024 02:49 pmThe Portland heat wave seems to be topping at just 102/103. It's not as high as feared, but we are having ~100 for longer than expected. Still, I figured I could make this event as long as I went in the morning and wore some of my dorky UV-rated clothes I usually only wear hiking. No way to look cool in a skin tight bright blue turtle neck thingie made out of spandex-like material... or at least no way for me to look cool like that. Still, it's effective. I wore this when I was in Alaska, and I was there in midsummer when the sun was high in the sky 24/7. UV rated clothing is amazing.
I am glad I went because I didn't want to miss a very medieval / D&D themed event at Wonderwood, but the heat still had an effect. I am pretty sure a chunk of the vendors ducked out. Also, some of the performers were out for like 5 minutes and disappeared, which is legit in this heat. Standard disclaimer - I am not complaining this is just flavor commentary.
They now have trinket / sticker / keychain / magnet exchange library at Wonderwood. Mike Bennett started a trinket exchange elsewhere in Portland, but it got insta-mobbed. So, he started this almost immediately. I brought some stickers and exchanged them for some Stranger Things stickers and a purple crystal sticker. This is awesome because not only do I need to focus in on Stranger Things more right now because I need to get progress on my bang, but also I got some Cursed Lands washi tape last week and had used it on my planner layout.
The exchange, the stickers I got and also the pin I bought:

I will contribute pins to the library soon, but didn't actually realize it also had a pin board. The pin I bought will go on a bag, but I don't know which one yet.
After I'd wandered the event a bit, I grabbed an iced oat milk latte from the Wonderwood Cafe and wandered St John for a bit. The new public access dock is open. It's for swimming in the Willamette River... intentionally. Like, for people who would choose to jump in, into the Willamette.

The river runs south and it's north of the superfund site that still hasn't gotten it's superfund funds from the 80s. Somehow every time a big funding thing passes and Oregon qualifies, most of the time we specifically don't get our cut. Environmental stuff, infrastructure packages, etc. There is an informational yarn bombing about the superfund situation that is or was nearby. I've looked for it on my last two trips to St Johns but I haven't found it yet. Also, 'informational yarn bombing about the superfund' is such peak Portland.
I do like the dock access, in short bursts. With my balance problem docks are not great. I was out in the heat and on the wobbly dock longer than I should have been, but only by a bit. Which, for me, is pretty good. I am usually very 'I can keep going, why would this thing other people can handle cause me to fall over for three days?'
I want to spend more time out on the dock and enjoy some of the photography opportunities, on a less hot, hazy and turbulent day, and in short bursts.
I also took a few swings at one of theclichéd classic Portland views:

This post is all just cell phone grabs. I'll see what bridge pics and other pics turned out soon.
