I was in chat rooms before El Jay was a thing. I discovered them before I found mailing lists. IRC was huge in the day, as was using in-game chats to talk fandom things.

I've seen people talk about Discord like it's the next evolution of the intarwebs. Sites like DW are allegedly dead because we've followed a natural progression to live chat. Sense, it makes none. The main thing Discord has over every other social media is a single button press to join in on a conversation. They streamlined access to it. I love DW, but getting set up here takes more work than other sites, especially since we don't have a ton of comms. We have more than we did and they are doing better, but barriers are still steep for a social media platform.

The way people prattle on about DW being Web 1.0 and dying to the amazing innovation of live chat is complete rot. Look at reddit. It's Web 1.0 as fuck in it's design. It's like forums circa 2005 just with less functionality and no mod tools. It's got an Alexa ranking of 21.

I use Discord a lot. I have problems with it, but those problems seem silly in comparison to my problems with twitter, facebook and tumblr. Some people use it and some wont. But the way some people talk about Discord tho is just so freaking nutballs and out of sync with reality. It drives me up a wall.

It's become a big place for fandom. I wish fandom was elsewhere. I wish fandom would mainly be on DW. But hey, at leat Discord is a platform with boundaries and content controls! In my book that makes it waaaay better than tumblr. I could bitch at length about Discord, but really, fandom being there is so much better than most other major sites.
