Only a few days left until the Yahoo Groups shutdown. Yahoo has started actively blocking archiving and has shut down access from emails of people volunteering to help Archive.org. link. Their response to this being reported on is to clamp down even more.

Yup. And from what I understand a lot of the work to date was setting up the access to DL stuff, and now all that work is wasted. They didn't lose a few days, they effectively lost weeks just from the email blocks.

Why are they blocking archiving? I can't understand why they'd interfere with people backing up data. (I was never involved in Yahoo Groups so it doesn't affect me, but I'm sympathetic to anyone who's now scrambling. That would be so infuriating.)

I don't know. I could speculate, but I really don't know.

I was in the mailing list era. I don't know if it was yahoo groups that I was on. The lists I was on likely had their fic archived or did a fandom purge of queer content and it was lost long ago.

Yahoo, as with most large tech companies, are total bastards. This is why I love Dw and AO3.

It's like a complete lack of regulation combined with a pressure to maximize profit is a bad thing for sites people socialize on.

That said, while I like running comms sometimes they are a nutziod amount of stress and hassle because people.
