Castlevania Season 3
Season 3 of Warren Ellis rolling around in things he likes. As an old school fan of Caslevania I should be annoyed at him using the franchise to do what he wants, but I love it. He's Warren Ellis. He does good stories.
He is really into OT3s these days. Currently, his One True OT3 is broken up and it was looking like two new OT3s were going to be formed, but then nope. Anyone liking the new OT3s instead of Warren's one true OT3 got the rug pulled out from under them.
For a moment it looked like he was actually going to do something Castelvania-y and have Dracula reborn, which would make the castle a threat again. But nope, the real rising evil is from the One True OT3 not being together.
Also, organized religion, he's not a fan. Everything horrible in this world setting comes from organized religion and also his OT3 not being together. Two characters have a long conversation about ethics and also the effects of religion for like half an episode.
Okay, I have to give him credit for incorporating one of the iconic SOTN boss fights. Also the forgemasters have interesting and fleshed out backstories. I really like what he's doing there. And I love the show in general, but literally spent a season setting up a classic Castlevania story arc only to go 'lol no' He isn't here to do a Castlevania series. He is here to do the sort of story he wants and is only using some names and concepts from the video game series because someone have him money.
He hasn't played the games. He isn't going to. He looked at a wikipedia article once. He's just going to do what he wants.
Locke and Key
I enjoyed it! A few things bug me and I wish the world building was a bit tighter. Like, the ghost dude in the graveyard is an info source and they never go back. I am also not a fan of making the school bully literally evil right after she was pretty cool.
Almost Paradise
I am writing this post to take a break from the pilot. I didn't expect this to be prestige TV levels of good writing, but damn, I also didn't expect baby's first fanfic level of dialogue writing. WTF happened to this show? Dean Devlin is credited as part of the writing team of some very, very good projects. Maybe he shouldn't be allowed to drive projects himself? Christian Kane basically plays a knock off of his Leverage character, but not in a good way.
I was looking forward to this stupid show. Maybe it'll get better. But this pilot makes me want to do anything else with my time.
