The camera system I've been using for 11 years is winding down. It's not ending, but with the moves the involved companies are making, it's winding down. Switching camera systems is going to be a pain in the ass. I don't intend to switch for at least a year, maybe three, but now is when I need to start the process of figuring out where I will go when I buy gear again.

On one hand, my OMD camera has a lot of visible case wear. I've used it a lot. It's possible when I switch system that I will have worn through this camera's expected number of shutter actuations. (All cameras have a life span measured in expected shutter releases. Olympus' tend to be 2-10x more releases than other systems.)

On the other hand, learning the specific focusing, meter weighting, menu system, low light color profile distortions, etc of every camera takes a lot of work. I have a LOT of experience with how Oly builds cameras.

I bought into Olympus 11 years ago because I was pretty sure their approach was the future of photography. And, I was right. Canon, Nikon and others have been biting their style pretty hard for the past few years and competing heavily in their market space. The one thing the other camera systems don't have is Oly's weatherproofing. My OMD can be dunked into streams and is at no risk in rainy, mucky, salty or even pumice-dust filled areas. I am going to have to start caring about maintaining camera temperature when snowshoeing to avoid sensor damage ... ugh.... I am so used to not caring about that.

This sucks, but it mostly sucks in a 'I have to spend a ridiculous amount of time learning/researching/acclimating' as opposed to sunk financial cost. One of my quarantine projects was really fine tuning my sense of the metering modes by cycling them and also doing a bunch of technical stuff to learn Olympus-specific features better. I am supposed to be in a lens selection webinar Friday morning.

Good luck with finding a new camera system! It sounds rather complicated to my inexperienced ear :O

Ugh, that is frustrating going from such a good system to ones where you have to compensate.
