This is a toughie. My canons are either well known by anyone reading this, or too niche or are video games.
Leverage:
I'll start with the super obvious. Leverage is amazing. One of the best things about reccing Leverage is that the show can absolutely be judged on it pilot, provided you watch to the end. Most genre shows need time to hit it's stride. Leverage is an easy recc because you never have to say 'just get through the first season' or anything like that. It's well written, shippy and lots of fun.
And a new season is coming, so right now is a great time to jump in!
Horror games:
If you want reccs, ask! There are a lot of good horror games right now, but some of the best are still in early access. It's hard to recc games like World of Horror that are great, but the price is dear for the current amount of content. Phasmaphobia is great if you are up for co-op games. Oxenfree is gorgeous and have great level design.
So, yeah, if you like horror, games or otherwise, just ask for reccs and I'll do my best.
That is all I can think of right now. I might one-off recc posts here and there because I've realized people do like knowing what others in fandom are watching and knowing what reccs people in their circle have.

Date: 2021-01-09 10:26 pm (UTC)From:Oh my god, really? That's the best news I've heard in months. I love Leverage; such well written characters and amazing team dynamics (all supplemented by fun stories and delightful antagonists). I agree, it's hard not to love right from the outset.

Date: 2021-01-10 07:43 am (UTC)From:A lot of horror games that I come across seem to want to either be "let's cram as many jump scares as we can into the gameplay" or "we make it horror by the amount of blood and bodies that are involved!", and neither of those ideas really appeals to me. I startle badly, so I pretty well hate jump scares of all kinds, and I don't really want games where the characters are going to be killed in as many nasty ways as they can be on the screen. I'm not sure I really want to play horror games, because I'm iffy about playing games where the object is to scare me, too. Am I just out of luck in the horror genre? ("Yes" is a perfectly acceptable answer.)

Date: 2021-01-10 08:12 am (UTC)From:The current hotness in horror games is Phasmaphobia which can be played as a 'run around and scream, troll your friends' game or as a serious puzzler where you take risks to get more information. There is nothing in the game that I'd consider a jump scare, but the aim is to be scary. It's just much better done and no blood or decapitations. You might be out of luck if you don't want to get spooped yourself. I don't find a lot of horror games scary, though.
If you don't want to be scared by a horror game, what would you be looking for in a horror game?

Date: 2021-01-10 08:25 am (UTC)From:Like, I sort of think of Half-Life as a horror game, even thigh it has a semi do premise and shooter mechanics, because as the story unfolds, there's a lot more understanding of just how terrible things are and what lengths are being gone to to try and cover it all up. (It's also got some jump scares, too, but I don't remember there being too many of them?)

Date: 2021-01-10 09:06 pm (UTC)From:I am trying a few more indie horror games soon that sound promising, but I haven't played them yet. Buying both The Witness and The Year Walk put me off of indie games for a while. I am slowly, carefully starting to try a few more.
