It does have that whiff of "ah yes, all is well" to it, doesn't it?
I was never much of a SPN fan. By all rights I should have been; I actually really enjoyed the first season, and into the second... where I just stopped watching at the second to last episode. My college roommate and her friends were VERY into it, and I think I maybe got a bit of hype aversion to it at the time. Later on, I saw a fair number of mid-series episodes just by catching it on TV periodically, but by that point my friends who were in the fandom had all been talking about how frustrating and less-good it seemed to get, so I never got attached, haha.
I had a hype aversion problem, too. The people I knew who were into it were so into it that I didn't want them latching onto me to talk about it. I used to wait until the season was over and binge in silent peace. They were so intense about it, I could watch it while it aired because if I caught a reference or something they'd just swarm. (These were people I worked with in the convention scene and one is still fighting in Due South ship wars to this day.)
Still, Jensen's face feels like part of the fabric of media fandom. Even if you aren't into it it's just part of ... the constant background noise of fandom.
The writer's strike derailed the actual intended plot, and wow they made weird plotline decisions over the years. I do still enjoy that early season vibe... even if Overly Sarcastic Productions used it as their main example for their recently episode on fridging.
Saaaame. A few of them were SO hyper into it that I just didn't want to get dragged into it, lol. But oof, definitely worse when it's someone you were working with.
Supernatural was definitely one of those giga-fandoms, though. I don't think that anyone could be a part of fandom-in-general without having at least SOME cross-pollination with Supernatural. I've never gone out of my way to *avoid* the fandom or anything, but holy crap did I wind up knowing an awful lot about what was happening in it, despite never seeking that information out, haha. So it is a bit comforting to see the same old standbys, haha.
It definitely leaned into some not-my-fave tropes, but it was enjoyable to watch. I LIKE monster of the week shows, so the early seasons appealed to me a lot more than where it wound up going, ha.
SPN was like a fungus, it spread. Small fandoms would wake up and see half the fic on Ao3 be 'Sam and Dean show up in your canon lol'.
BTS is likely bigger, but if you aren't into it you don't know what's going on over there. SPN fandom, tropes, crossovers, AUs and wank was everywhere. It was inescapable.
I loved a lot of things about it, but it got overwhelming.
It absolutely was! Its spores got into EVERYTHING.
I am aware on the periphery of BTS as a thing that exists. (Mostly due to some prolific DW journals in various fic comms, and a few general tumblrs I follow that are also BTS fans.) But true story: I have NO idea what any of that is about, haha. It seems a bit more content than SPN was to just be its own thing, with a smaller range of things it crosses over with.
But SPN was truly inescapable.
I think I *could* have enjoyed SPN more than I did, but definitely wouldn't want to put the time investment in now, especially knowing how disappointing much of it was even for many of its devoted fans.
Yeah, I think the best approach to SPN is to pick an episode and pretend it either ended there or was suddenly cancelled. Kinda like how it's a running thing in Highlander fandom that there was never a season 6.
I can see that vastly improving the experience of watching it, haha.
I've definitely got a few fandoms like that. "Sure is a shame they never made that second Silent Hill movie. The cast looked so promising! Shame it absolutely died in pre-production and was definitely never released."

Seriously, though, it's nice to see some things not changing.
