I hadn't done this in a while, but I went on google maps and dropped pins everywhere I know I was yesterday. If I walked the most efficient route between those points, I would have walked 10.7 miles. But my route wasn't efficient, it was wandery. So, tack on at least another mile. That's not too bad!
When I got home I was pretty tired, so I neglected to open my camera bag and leave my very, very wet gear out to dry. It's fine, but I don't want to leave my bag's interior wet like that. I also cleaned my gear today. There was something on my sensor, so I had to clean that, too. I hate cleaning the sensor. It wasn't too bad. I still have never needed to use a wet process on it. I tested my sensors for cleanliness a few months back. Somehow, they are in good shape!
It's weird when I get all these ads for protective rain covers for cameras. If I had another system could I really not just have it hanging out on a capture clip in the rain for hours? I am careful with my Lensbabys, but the rest of my gear I just rinse in the sink if it get muddy.

Date: 2021-12-23 07:42 am (UTC)From:I'm glad your gear is pretty hardy for the rain. I imagine that having a camera that couldn't stand up to getting rained on would be difficult in Portland, lol. I would hope that most high-end equipment could handle what seem like not terribly outrageous shooting conditions, but maybe not!

Edit - turns out to not be hyperbole! The high-end-brand version of my camera has issues with corrosion from *hand sweat* and in testing stopped working in a light mist. How I handle my gear would wreck most brands. I am just very used to Olympus at this point. Glad I never 'upgraded' to Sony.

Date: 2021-12-24 04:56 am (UTC)From:I certainly wouldn't expect most stuff to stand up to being SUBMERGED in water or something, but geez, I don't feel like "taking pictures when my hands might sweat" or "there was a bit of a drizzle" are wildly exotic or unexpected settings to be taking pictures in, so I would have thought more cameras would be able to stand up to that!

Date: 2021-12-24 07:24 am (UTC)From:My specific set up, the body and either of my 2 most commonly used lenses, can be dunked in arctic streams. I don't expect most gear to tolerate that! It's funny because I get talked down to for using m43 gear, but it turns out that most gear literally can't take the pictures I do, unless I ... an umbrella wouldn't work for some. There are sealed plastic bags where you can't work the knobs or screens. There are semi sealed bags where you have to have the camera in hand the whole time? Ugh, miserable. Couldn't do that on a whole hike or 12 mile walk.
The brand 'real' mirrorless photogs used has the worst track record for moisture problems.
I am suddenly feeling so much better about my gear choices :)
it's really surprising to most, I think because cell phones tend to be decently waterproof. You wouldn't think a stand alone camera would be so possibly vulnerable.

Date: 2021-12-26 03:14 am (UTC)From:I find it genuinely shocking that so many of the "high end" "recommended" brands and specific cameras that are apparently most favored are so... intolerant, lol. I guess it is the fact that cell phones have tended to increase in sturdiness and tolerance to minor mishaps that makes me think all tech that you'd plan on taking with you into the "field" should be the same way.
You should feel good about your gear choices - you have what works for what you do, which is apparently a rare thing! Screw you, gear snobs!

Date: 2021-12-27 02:50 am (UTC)From:Ugh, I'd do the same damn thing regarding the asshole in the camera store. (I did something similar once in a game store; bought something online because the guy behind the counter was such a dick to me about which system I was buying for.)
