* So if I did a fusion between Stranger Things and Leverage... Steve is a long haired hitter... Wait! No, dammit. He's like... Airhead!Eliot Spencer. Small town, roughly same era of childhood... there are significant differences but still...
Actually, sorting the SThings crowd into hitter, grifter, thief, etc is amusing.
* I did finish the next chapter of The Road Ahead, and have part of chap 2 written... but I will post on Friday to give myself time to edit. I am both on schedule and not. Also, I may concurrently be writing a story they them as a couple that involves Steve still dealing with some stuff, like being new to m/m sex. The story isn't a sequel, but it could be because I've got the same HCs in both. I've got Steve as bi. I've got Eddie as gay and somewhat experienced. He's not experienced from Hawkins, though. During that era D&D gatherings in the summer were a big thing. We'd call them informal conventions now, but they didn't use those terms. From what I understand, some were gay friendly and some where not. The not-friendly ones still had queer people meeting up on the downlow. Geographically, it's logical that Eddie would have gone to some in Ann Arbor, Michigan and 90% of what I know about that city is that it was the place for both gay and nerd bookstores back in the day. So, basically his summer trips to buy books, dice and hang with other DMs was also a hookup scene for him.
Now, paradoxically sometimes in leftist/queer friendly cities the geek/RPG events are actually very conservative and the ones in very conservative areas are far more accepting. I have spent insane amounts of my life chatting about this with people who moved to Portland and were surprised by some of Portland's geek/con scenes being very conservative and very libertarian-tolerant. If I had a nickel for every person who told me their D&D scene or anime con back in the midwest was way more progressive and inclusive I'd be able to order a big fancy Starbucks drink. I could write long essays on the things that contributed to this. In any case, he'd have access to multiple summer gatherings and at least one would have been his in to the queer scene even if Ann Arbor's wasn't.
Anyway, the story is about Steve dealing with being new to stuff when his partner very much isn't. Also what the experience of having access to a gay bookstore was like pre-current-internet. Just, going from an area with no info, no access, no... nothing, and then suddenly being in a little converted house stuffed with books, PFLAG flyers, etc. There isn't a trip in the story, but one is talked about. I really like writing about that feeling.
Anyway, I don't have to complete all of this during hiatus, but I am giving it a go.
The Light Ahead is at 7.5k words
(no working title) is at like 2k
Ironically, America Online by The Midnight started playing while I typed this... which is about that moment when people started being able to connect at night in their rooms at glowing computers.

Joyce is an A+ mastermind, for sure.
