While I have many notes on the book, I was very charmed by what someone working on the movie said. I saw a YT short of the Comic Con panel and I think it was one of the directors who said 'If the universe depended on it, can adult men make friends?'

That is a cute way to approach the film. ... but also Iridians don't have gender or differentiated biological sexes. It's just Ryland Grace just projecting gender onto both Rocky and their mate. So, it's more 'can an adult man make friends with an agender space spider that he perceives as male?'
I kinda wish Andy Weir had just made Rocky a guy. It would have made sense because the book used the panspermia theory of the existence of life. Humans, Iridians and Astrophage are all related. I don't want to be that guy pointing out that Rocky isn't actually a guy. From the MC's POV it is about male friendship.
It was a cute POV on the book and a good one to make the movie from. This should have been a short post.
