My Wordpress website is still broken due to known issues with the Gutenberg update. I went to the Wordpress training session for Gutenberg tonight. I wasn't expect a fix for my specific situation, but I was hoping to learn more in general.
It was a hot mess. The presenter kept failing to remember that wordpress.com and wordpress.org sites are different things. She phrased a lot of things in confusing ways so some of the newbies were super lost. Some of the shiny features of the new editor that she showed off are exclusive to paid plug-ins. She was showing off $350 of upgrades like they were part of the update.
A lot of people were grumpy about the update, which makes sense. Some people have broken websites and some people are looking at converting literally a thousand pages of content. So, she decided to break up the tension with an anecdote. The test site she is using is a landscaper's business site and her dad was a landscaper. So, she's suddenly telling us about her her Dad would pick up workers each week from in front of Mission Gospel. If they were bad workers he's pay them than that, but if the were good workers he wouldn't pay them until the end of the week so they'd have to keep coming back. After her story she posed for a moment expecting some sort of response. She got stony silence. I think most people didn't even pick up on what she was saying. It helps if you know that Mission Gospel is the outreach program for undocumented Mexican immigrants. She was attempting to break the tension in the room with a story about her dad withholding pay from immigrant day laborers for his own benefit. wtf, yo?
After failing to win back the room with her anecdote, the room kept falling into side discussions. A guy raised his hand like he had a question. She called on him. He did not have a question. He just wanted to talk loudly in a commanding voice about how we were being resistant to change, how we were all being backward thinking and all our websites were going to get hacked if we didn't get with the times. That was weird and inappropriate.
So, that was my night. yarg

Date: 2019-01-08 05:19 am (UTC)From:It's always strange, too, to hear stories that backfire. "Wait," you say at the end of it, "is this supposed to make you look good? Because omg your ass."
My condolences for all of it, and hoping that you have a decent time interval before that sort of jackassery happens again.

Date: 2019-01-08 05:43 am (UTC)From:And the guy going all bossy on us was nuts. Some people in their have self-run businesses that are dependent on their web presence. I can't update or promote my work until I sort out thorny problems. One person lost access to her own content.
I forgot the cherry on top of the whole thing. The presenter wanted to take a selfie of her with the class of of people excitedly learning Guterberg. She has the latest google phone and kept asking google to 'take selfie'. She um ... didn't realize there was a count down timer and had the phone already down both times it reached zero. She took a picture of the floor and of the desk. What a mess.

The bossy guy reminds me of the kinda person you always have in a group assignment at school. It's like a school policy that there must be an a-hole in each group, and it's their job to insist that this has to be high-quality work and then they don't do a damn thing.
