Challenge #8
In your own space, create a wishlist.
This feels a bit odd to do since I recently did Holiday Wishes. If anyone wants to see the list I did for that it's here.
I wanted to think of things not on that list and I came up with something:
My wish is for other people to make posts on the comms I run. My comms have good momentum when I post regularly, but it get draining to do solo. A lot of fans on DW who weren't around on LJ sometimes don't even realize that it's actually okay for them to also post, especially short posts or questions. Having other people post makes it feel lively and makes it more likely that members might also start posting.
The comms I run are -
indeedsir - Jeeves & Wooster / Wodehouse comm
photographyon - A general photography comm
transmediaclub - For talking about canons with trans rep and/or trans actors.
Other people making even short posts on these comms would be an amazing help. I want to keep these fandom spaces going and have places to talk about things that aren't twitter or tumblr. But it can be such a slog sometimes without any help.

Date: 2021-01-16 11:21 am (UTC)From:It's interesting that I've seen so many posts where people have been saying that comms don't get enough posts and other people saying that their reading lists have gone quiet because no one is posting to comms! I really hope this challenge will draw people's focus to comms so that they actively take part and post, all it needs one person to start a discussion so I hope that all of the comments on this challenge will, encourage people to post a bit more often and start their own discussions on comms!
I will definitely be heading over to your photography comm as I really need some more encouragement to get the most out of my camera and, basically, just get out and use it!
Thank you for sharing, I hope your wishes are granted.

Date: 2021-01-17 06:05 am (UTC)From:It's frustrating because it doesn't take much to get a com humming along, but it does take more than one person posting. Active comms are wanted, but we need people making them lively.

Date: 2021-01-16 07:48 pm (UTC)From:Er. I subscribe to photography comms so I can look at and sometimes boost images, rather than because I want a place to post things.

As a community host, I have found it helpful to ask for volunteers to handle specific tasks.
With the photography community, inviting other people to host challenges should work. Everyone has different interests -- this is an opportunity for members to promote theirs. One person might love shooting vehicles, another wildlife, and a third fine art still lifes.
With trans media, I suggest asking members to boost their favorite canon. You can make it easier by drafting a template like:
Name of canon (link to reference if available)
Creator name(s)
Type of media (e.g. TV show with 3 seasons, ongoing)
Fanworks (with links)
Trans* character(s)
Trans* theme(s)
Thumbnail description
Pros and cons
Star rating
Most especially, watch for people to complain that they don't have what you have to offer. Then you tell them where to get it, and invite them to do something active in it. I've probably recced my comms to several dozen people in the Snowflake, and at least a handful of times I've invited people to host or post something that would fit, like the folks hankering after a rare fandom. You want to promote your thing? Come do a fest on it! And yes, we've had alt sex/gender fests on

You may find these (or similar) categories useful:
Type of rep
How involved the representation is. This description only encompasses the title stated. If, for example, a character is aromantic but it is only mentioned in the second book of a series, then the first book remains “Word of God”. The second will show “On Page” or “Word used”, depending on context.
Word of God -- The character’s sexuality is not explicited on page, but the author has confirmed it. This means it may never come up as a narrative element, so be warned!
On page -- The character’s sexuality is explicitly demonstrated within the text. It should be stated, discussed, or showed to an extent that makes it clear to the readers.
Word used -- The identity is stated using the actual word (this usually means it is also On Page)
My work spans all three. Some trans characters have pretty much assimilated into their gender of identity, but if I know they're trans, I typically note it. Contemporary characters may use that or similar words to describe themselves. But I also write about a lot of other genderflexy characters and concepts, which may involve other words, and may or may not fit the character's culture.
This spectrum gives readers an idea of how much the character appears:
Character importance
The character’s importance to the story
Lead -- The character is at the heart of the story’s central storyline
Main -- The character plays an important role in the story and is frequently on page
Side -- The character plays a minor role in the story
Regarding quality of portrayal, you might find some use in my "Identity Literature" post laying out how the evolution typically goes from none to bad to mediocre to worthwhile. I never have the patience to wait through all that and just pop a new trait into a lead role, but then I'm weird.
I'll take a look at the community. Thanks for mentioning it! Hmm, I should boost the signal too, I have trans and other alt-gender folks in my audience.

Date: 2021-01-17 03:41 am (UTC)From:Though I think you're right - a lot of people are more used to tumblr, where there are pages that run based on submitted content, sourced by multiple people, but only the account holder (or maybe mods who share the login) can actually make posts.

Date: 2021-01-17 06:13 am (UTC)From:FB hides the posts of low engagement users. I'm a low engagement user so my stuff gets hidden. It's pretty frustrating. The only way out of it is to deliberately make drama.
I can tell people over and over again that can post post even if it's just a short question, but they wont unless other people do. People osmosis what is okay and not okay to do in an online space based on what they see others do.
In some early LJ comms mods would sockpuppet to show how the comms should work and how comments would thread.

Date: 2021-01-18 01:49 am (UTC)From:I am a VERY low engagement user on FB, haha. But have no desire to start drama, so I don't use it for much beyond just keeping up with people I don't have contact with elsewhere.
Anything image-heavy is a slog for my poor laptop (not viewing them, but trying to upload them or edit them), but if I can sort out a way to make it less frustrating, I'll try to find something to contribute to the photography comm!
A lot of the books and series I read have trans characters, so I'll try to do some writeups/recs (even brief ones) to share them. I didn't see anything in the comm rules about how prominent trans characters and themes should be in the media being discussed... is something that has a trans side character worth including, or would you prefer it be kept to works that prominently feature them?

Date: 2021-01-18 07:23 am (UTC)From:Write ups would be great! The characters don't need to be prominent. What I am trying to avoid is like what I talked about in my post about trying to find trans games. A lot of various spaces like book clubs and recc lists act like Homestuck, Transformers, The Bone Doll's Twin, Iron Man, Dragon Age: Origins, etc. are trans canons. Vibing is great. Headcanons are great. But Tell Me Why and DA:O belong on separate lists.
There are ongoing podcasts examining Homestuck as a trans masc narrative even though AFAIK it has no trans content and wasn't intended as a trans narrative.

Date: 2021-01-19 03:29 am (UTC)From:That's definitely reasonable! I've very often come across stuff that's widely recc'd as some kind of queer must-read/play/watch, and then find out that... it's some great subtext, or a fun headcanon, but not actually overt. And I don't mind getting told "hey, this has some great subtext" or "a queer reading of this makes xyz thing really interesting", but it's not the same as looking for something canon.
