A whole chunk towards the start of the movie was being meta about 'what would a Matrix reboot look like?' and 'what is the meaning of the Matrix?'
Not a good sign when the movie does that much navel gazing.
I kept waiting for Neo to say he wasn't leaving without Trinity. Then he left without her. Later they go back with the understanding that they'd be risking a city. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the Neo.
The new Smith actor was so weak. Him saying classic Agent Smith lines was the weakest thing I've ever seen.
The ending was okay, but the freed humans just giving up? Realistic, I guess, but the whole thing felt like the story gave up on people in favor of stories. It felt fatalistic. Too many meta jokes still happening late in the film make it hard to take seriously.
I didn't hate it. I guess I am not invested enough in Neo and Trinity to enjoy 'everything sucks, but they are back together!'
