When Elon Musk first looked at buying twitter I was upset and surprised at how upset I was. I really do rely on twitter for some things and have for a long time. The company going private would be horrible.

Then the offer was rejected and twitter put into place protection against a hostile takeover and I was relieved. I started to put more effort into my account since I realized how attached to it I was. During that brief time, some of my twitpics got some traction. I got actual likes on my photos! But I also had to keep twitter open in a tab to remove all the trolls wanting to trigger the Portland lib, some with explicit pictures.

But now twitter has been sold to him after all. Well, shit. And honestly, since I can't do content there without babysitting it all day long, not as upset as I'd thought I'd be.

For now I am going to trim my followers list down so I have less reason to be there. I am still following a few accounts just to see if they are going to establish a presence elsewhere. When the sale closes I'll only be following 5 accounts, or fewer if those accounts go elsewhere.

This is just the impetus I need to do a serious culling of Twitter. I still need a couple of tightly curated lists for the time being, but as soon as I no longer need the contents of those lists they will go too. Twitter has been toxic for a long time and it's time to cut loose.

Yeah, I think my attachment to the site was nostalgia. 2010 twitter is long gone. I don't actually want current twitter, I was 2010 back.

I’m really only there to talk to (counts fingers) 6 people (I think?) on a locked account. I’ll stay there as long as they’re there, but everything else is elsewhere. :/

Yeah, if a few people leave twitter I'll be mostly gone. It's still too useful as a way to track like current events or get alerts.

Even as someone who just hasn't been able to *get* twitter I hate that it sold (and to him specifically.) It won't break my heart to deactivate (which I likely will), but I always liked having it there as a thing I could maybe try and figure out at some nebulous future point.

I hope that either the stuff you do follow stays good, or becomes easily and functionally followed elsewhere.

And ugh, such garbage that you have to babysit the content constantly. Yuck. That should not be the price of success on such sites, and yet.

Yeah, that one twitpic doing well was an eye-opener. I've had images get hundreds or even thousands of likes on FB and have never dealt with anything like that.

That's really terrible that you had to do such constant moderation of it. Twitter seems just wildly fucking toxic, and I can't imagine that's going to IMPROVE now.
