* Outer Range
I've seen the whole season now. I know because googling the number of episodes I found out that the show was over. That... was the finale? I had 0 clue that was supposed to be the finale. The one thing about the mystery that was obvious was confirmed, but not why or how or when. And, nothing else. All other character fates are up in the air to some degree.
I have no clue what the point of that was.
* The new season of Roswell New Mexico comes out next month, and that will be the end of it. The CW just announced a new round of cancellations.
* Star Trek: Discovery
Since I have Paramount anyway for Strange New Worlds and Picard, I decided to give the new season a try.
Honestly, it started out on a more even keel than other seasons. Then I hit an episode... you know those episodes where from a few minutes in you can tell the entire plot? Someone is going to do something incredibly stupid, and the problems will be predictable, etc, etc? Yeah, I hit one of those. I just noped out hard.
One of the ongoing problems with the show is characters being very rebellious. Lots of backtalk and refusing to follow orders. That's fine sometimes, but pretty much the whole crew is 'I do what I want'. A theme of this season is accepting that maybe command structure has a purpose. Adira is getting schooled on being more of a 'team player' when they haven't been one tenth as stubborn or uncooperative as the average crew member.
It's like Adira was lied to just to get them in a situation to learn about following orders better in the same episode another crew member is going off the rails and is going to be forgiven even though they wanted to put a whole planet in danger because they felt competitive.
Jett is the one character with a reason to be as rebellious as she is, and also get away with it. And yet her attitude is within reasonable limits and she does focus on what's important most of the time. Other characters just act like schoolchildren.
There are some good things about the show, how it deals with diversity and trauma. There is a lot about characters who grew up before The Burn and how different they are from characters who've only known The Burn. It's an obvious and effective political allegory about people raised with hope for the future, versus kids who are *gestures at everything* The show has a lot of good characters, themes and ideas but then they just stick in a blender and add shrooms.
The show is just so freakin' frustrating.

Date: 2022-05-15 03:05 am (UTC)From:I'm also sad to hear that Roswell, New Mexico was cancelled. It's also been on my want-to-watch list. I hope this last season gives it a decent conclusion, rather than an unsatisfying end-that-wasn't-meant-to-be.
