* I've seen references here and there that a lot of how ChatGPT and other programs operate rely on underpaid labor that the companies try to hide. Yesterday, African workers who labor underpins TikTok, Meta and ChatGPT pledged to establish the first African Content Moderators Union. They 'detoxify' the aps by moderating the worst content. The initial group is about 150 people, but they talk about the TikTok mods joining and that's between 40k-50k people according to other articles. 'AI moderation' relies on tens of thousands of people making between 1.50 to 2 dollars an hour. Also, it's very possible some of these workers are behind making OpenAI seem more sentient than it is, but having actual people behind the curtain.

And this is part of why the WGA has it's stance against using 'AI' I was on the AI working group for the wgawest formed and led by dblackanese (thank him for his prescience) and this was one of the really interesting things we learned in the research. ChatGPT depends on shitloads of human grind work feedback for training and maintenance. - John Rogers

Adam Conover, who's involved in the WGA strike negotiating team, has been talking a lot about text generators and chatbots recently too.

Oh, I didn't know he was involved with that! I did see one video of his that was useful context on some of this.

He had a bit on Lovett or Leave It a couple weeks back explaining Why Strike, but I thought his episode of Factually with Emily Bender and Timnit Gebru was a really good look at why the text generators are not going to effectively replace us, if longish. Plus Bender and Gebru are hilarious guests.
