* As I've said a few times, problems or no, not good to have all the eggs in one basket. AO3 is under a prolonged DDOS attack and when sites get targeted for this serious of a large scale attack there is usually more than one attack.

While I have gone poking, I assume the following is 100% true "A group presenting themselves as a collective of religiously and politically motivated hackers has claimed responsibility for the attack. Experts do not believe they are honest about their motivation, so we urge caution in believing any reasoning they provide for targeting AO3." Ao3 Tweet. ... also probably no one here needs to be told that taking the statements of the attackers seriously is just going to lead to bad faith drama and BS.

* I keep hearing people complaining about Threads. Thing is, that volume of complaints means lots of people are using it. That frustration only comes from one place. So, I poked my nose in. I have a separate simcard-less device and don't actually use Apple Health so a lot of the privacy stuff doesn't really effect me any more than Instagram. I can't see the point of it, I cannot get seen to save my soul, Zuck is possibly worse than Musk he is just more low-key about shit...

But seeing Elon freak out and do the most humiliating shit like begging Mr. Beast to get attention... if shit's going to be fucked might as well get a laugh out of it?

Also, twitter usage is actually having a serious drop off? On the Phil DiFranco show he showed some posts detailing traffic loss according to Cloudflare. Googling I am seeing a number of articles about declining traffic, top users tweeting less, etc. And those articles are from before the whole view limit thing which made a LOT of companies go 'well, shit, we can't use Elon's twitter for what we use twitter for'. A big problem being gaming companies or anyone who wants to give server updates, suddenly they don't have a good way to set updates to users. They urgently want to be off twitter and on some other chronological site, even if it's a self-hosted forum. *glances at above bullet point* Okay, I'll just fucking say what I've been thinking for a while now: In the current social media climate torching reliable ways to send news to users is dumb as shit. It was dumb as shit before today. That kind of direct route to core users is the stuff social media managers would usually commit felonies to get, and right now would commit major ones. Especially since people getting news second hand has risen dramatically in the past 5 years, good communication to the highly invested long term users is gold, tweets are grass.

* Idiot me got a bad sunburn on my scalp about a week ago and both shampooing and not-shampooing is irritating it and lotion just dries weird on my hair and also gets irritating. I am doing my best to care for it but I may legit shave my head again just to be able to treat the bad spots.

Ouch! Sunburn on the scalp sounds awful! The first hot day we had, I got a wicked sunburn on the back of my shoulders because I just...kind of...forgot that sunburns were a thing. I can't imagine how much it would suck on the scalp.

Plus, yeah...having all your eggs in one basket isn't great. It sucks that so many fandoms don't have a presence on other sites yet, like SquidgeWorld Archive, or they're tucked away in hard-to-find places like personal websites that aren't easy to find unless you know what you're looking for.

I had neck sunscreen on but took off my hat because it was hot. Then I was just randomly outside a bit trying to soak in sunshine while it was still there before the smoke came and that tipped me into a burn.

Yeah, AO3 is very useful and when something is that good and useful, it's great but it means people don't know what to do without it. I do have one fic on squidge and I will eventually put my fic here as well. But, importantly I do have my stuff DL'ed and organized.

Semi-ironically, AO3 being down is preventing me from easily moving things to sources other than AO3, lol. [Yeah, I have stuff elsewhere, but copying it with html already in place is a million times easier.]
Though yeah, this attack sucks, and I hope the site can get stuff sorted out as soon as possible, though DDoS attacks are just in general really shitty.

Social media stuff is such a dumpster fire. I'm... perversely glad that twitter seems to be suffering, even as it sucks for the people who don't have anywhere else to easily move to. But yeah, removing the ability to actually provide info to users is just... wow. All these mega tech geniuses...

At least it is pretty funny.

There just isn't a twitter replacement. With twitter requiring people to be logged in to see tweets, not even twitter is a twitter replacement. Even without view limits, the reach of people/companies on twitter is gone. Tumblr also severely limited how much you can see logged out, and you can hit that limit easily trying to find something.

Stupidly I was low key wishing Cohost would actually get it's shit together, because it's system could replace a lot of twitter functions and I did see some game companies name camp over there.

It sucks how nothing else can replicate what Twitter does. Or, well... did. Since it can't be used in the ways that were most useful any longer.

Tumblr seems to be in their own race to "how to best fuck it up" even if they did some backpedaling.

Lots of companies obviously want people to use their social media, but yeah, basically all of the big ones won't allow you to even browse at the site without signing up anymore, which makes any kind of information dissemination very difficult.

Of the various sites that started trying to get going post-first-Twitter-implosion, Cohost was the one that sounded the most promising.

Honestly, right now DW is a good option for people. AO3 was redirecting people to accounts for updates, but unless they had an account they hit the limit before seeing the current status or specific info they were after.

Cohost, being new, could have been the place but they are a sinking ship it sounds like. Man, despite the red flags I was really hoping Cohost would pull it together

DW is an excellent option in a lot of ways, *especially* as more spaces seem to be trying an enshittification speedrun.

The timing is a bit... ironic, I suppose, that AO3 had just killed the DW comm. Yet twitter, their primary communication account, is practically unusable because of the changes twitter has been making. (The tumblr account worked okay, though I *thought* I was following all of their communication accounts there, and it turned out I wasn't. I found the needed posts only because other people reblogged them.)

That sucks about Cohost. I'd held off on making an account in the hopes that they'd sort out some of the early (or early-twitter-exodus, at least) issues... It sucks that it sounds like that was not the case. :/
