* Drew Barrymore is out as the host of the National Book Awards due to her tv show.

* I am starting to see bluesky invites in places where if I was fast enough I could have nabbed them. I haven't yet because honestly, not yet sure if want. As a serial early adopter of social media it feels weird but I am not really interested. I hear good things, but I since it's a walled garden I can't even take a peak or see what people who moved there are up to.

* Elon... sucks.

* Really enjoying all of Detune's paranormal lives streams recently. One of the weekend ones was great because one of the guests hadn't seen any of the streams and was totally unprepared for a lot of things, especially how dark the history of some of the places are. But, the streams are very serious about boundaries and breaks so everyone made clear he could nope out at any point. It was more than he expected by a lot, but he also does plan to come along again.

Honestly, if you like paranormal or found footage, check him out. Lots of creepy fic inspiration like chat noticing things they don't ect. Creepy fun, great vibes, etc. But also it's everything from tech set up to breaks so it's like... have something else to do during the streams. He also streams testing the equipment, packing it, editing the footage, etc.

I think a walled garden is exactly how I'd describe it. I got an invite a few months ago, and it's incredibly... weird. It has the sort of atmosphere where people are trying really hard to convince themselves that they're having a lot of fun over there, which is funny because it's dead as hell. I check it maybe once or twice a week, and rarely feel like I'm missing out on anything. It's very much the social media platform for people who hate Twitter, which means that the majority of the content is all about how much people hate Twitter, and it gets incredibly stale incredibly quickly.

Most of the people I follow from Twitter are inactive, probably because they're waiting for it to actually get interesting. And that just creates a negative feedback loop. Meanwhile I see a lot of them on Twitter talking about how if you're not on Bluesky, you're really missing out, guys! You need to get on there! Like, who are you trying to convince? lol

Yeah, so many people will publicly flounce from Twitter and make a big deal about moving to Bluesky, and then a week later be back on Twitter cuz guess what, no one uses Bluesky. It’s got no useful features and the atmosphere is weird. I’ve had a couple people bug me for invites, and I gave them one, only to watch the accounts get immediately abandoned because the site is way over-hyped.

The only reason I’m even there was because someone offered me a code and it seemed churlish to turn it down.

Mastodon is so much better. It's kind of like tumblr in the sense that you curate your experience. Mastodon is decentralized so if you want to get started you can choose a server (called an Instance) and if you don't like the one you started with you can just move without losing any of your followers or posts. I started with the biggest Instance (mastodon.social) because it's the most active, but there are many. BlueSky has issues.

I was glad to see that she was kicked from hosting the National Book Awards. It may be the only consequence she faces, but at least it's something.
Less thrilled to see that apparently several other talk shows are following her lead and lying about somehow being compliant.

Also not sure how I feel about bluesky. I DO hear good things, but since I don't necessarily care for something mainly "like twitter" even if it is "like twitter but gooder", I can't really decide. The walled garden aspect is part of it... I can't TELL if I like the look/vibe/general community/type of use.

That sounds like good paranormal stuff! I don't do a lot of stream stuff, but it sounds good.

Yeah. I'm not thrilled that a bunch of people decided to try the same thing. "Gosh, it's fine if we just... don't hire union for our union-covered show, right? That's definitely not in opposition to the strike."

Agreed. I think I've seen a handful of screencapped bluesky posts, which is certainly not a *new* thing. All the jokes about the biggest five social media sites simply being screenshots of the other four came about for a reason, lol.
Buuuut, it does feel weird not to be able to link to something there. Or to be able to actually see an original post in-context and know that the screenshot was legitimate. (Yeah, deletions can always happen too, but it still feels different when there's NO way to verify.)
I guess plenty of the standard sites - twitter, tumblr, insta, FB - that all try to force you into making an account before you can get too far just as a lurker, but usually you can at least see *a* post someone links to, or scroll through some number of posts to get a sense of the general feeling and use of the space.
I *want* to be able to lurk before I jump in somewhere!
Plus yes. The biggest thing I DID rely on twitter for was real-time updates regarding news or weather or things... which doesn't work if you can't view the posts.

Right? I know that content theft/reposts happens, but having a site functionally demand that you do so, should you want to share information with someone outside said walled garden... eh, no thanks.
I guess it has to do with my general "old person internet" attitudes, but I'm both in favor of user-chosen privacy features, and open accessibility. I love sites that allow a user to choose to lock their posts in various fashions. But I'm not a fan of not being able or allowed to share something off-site or to someone who doesn't have their own account. I want posts to have links I can share if I want to!

And ugh, agreed. FB is a poor second choice for information dispersal, and the verification is much shakier than previous twitter.
I follow that account on tumblr as well! As far as I can tell it does seem to be legitimate, and there's never been anything posted or answered that makes me feel like it *isn't* him... but it's also true that sometimes there ARE convincing fakes! If I ever somehow come across some external verification of the account, I'll let you know, ha.

Exactly. You can share an original post so that attention accrues to the person who made that post. And yes, you can help it find a broader audience that it otherwise might never have had!

The idea of... well, you just have to steal it if you want someone else to see it is... yeah, antithetical to how I want the internet to work. There's enough content theft without encouraging it, much less baking it in to the functionality (or lack there of) of a site.

Understandable. I wish more people had a hard line stance when it comes to confirming information. I DO think it's him, and don't mind saying that... but it is different than outright telling other people that it definitely for sure is.
