* Against all odds, I've renamed my twitch account to something I like. It even relates to one of my GW2 character names, my elementalist. I haven't played my elementalist in group content in like 5 years... but it's a name I like and I know I don't mind being called it. No weird associations, etc. The name change will be a pain, but I am still happy.
* Not going to do a deep dive, but following Unity stuff is interesting. When's the last time a company got such pushback on false PR statements? or had hundreds of companies, meaning roughly 20 billion game installs, turn off monetization to just to seriously kick back? I haven't seen this kind of pushback on enshittification in at least a decade. Consumers, companies, devs and even their own employees. A bunch just up and left. Also, some European gaming union is pushing for law changes in response. The malware platform Unity was trying to shift people onto probably violates some EU laws and that's being looked into, maybe could get banned some places? Lawyers are pointing out their legal weaknesses in hopes of being picked for class action lawsuits.
It's 2023, watching people push back against CEOs trying to wreck things is self care. Especially after that news story about Musk having shown up for CDPR's studios with a gun asking for a role on Cyberpunk. He didn't point it at anyone, he just... yanno... had it with him and showed it to people until he got a cameo. And he's interfering the the war on the Ukraine because he can and... and... he changed 'retweet' to 'repost' because one of the few accusations against him that's stuck is that he reposts stolen content so he's trying to leverage his company to redefine the a word that used against him and actually stings and... and the Ukraine starlink thing... and... the Ukraine thing... (one of these things is not like the other so it bears repeated mumbling in horror)
Anyway, yeah, going to watch Bellular News and listen to Unity losing revenue sources and pretend that's all the news going on. Terraria is giving $100k each to two up and coming Unity competitors? This is some srs pushback.
* I *will* manage to do a drawing of my D&D character before next session. If I drew / used procreate consistently this wouldn't be so freaking hard! I have made some progress, but not there yet.

Date: 2023-09-21 03:27 am (UTC)From:I'm glad you found a name you like! It'll be well worth the temporary pain in the ass of dealing with a rename!
I've seen a few comparisons to the Unity thing made to the pushback when Wizards of the Coast did their shit with D&D, trying to shift things to subscription and attempting to force people to license things if they wanted to utilize any base mechanics. That was a pretty effective pushback, but the Unity stuff feels a lot bigger.
(My concerns about it fucking over future projects and the general stability of the industry aren't gone, but it IS... heartwarming to see how thorough and complete the "oh FUCK YOU" pushback has been.)
And yeah, I'd rather focus on that than any of the bullshit from Musk and... all of that.

Date: 2023-09-21 05:56 pm (UTC)From:Yeah, Unity is still an unreliable business partner now and nothing is going to fix the massive amount of damage outside unless they offer a binding contract to each and every studio and individual that the deal when they start a project wont change, and that is stupidly unlikely. Still nice to see them taking a beating. Though, gosh it was timely for the CEO to dump stock ahead of the announcement.
