Me: Do you remember that whole game stop thing? Nenya: Something about reddit bros on the stock market? Me: Well, after that, they seem to have started a religion?
Nenya (watching the bit with the children's books): Oh, this is like The JohnLock Conspiracy for reddit bros.
Nenya (at the end): Oh, this is like the cult I grew up in predicting when Jesus was going to come back!
It took off during the pandemic so I assume it's like with NFTs, people so desperate for community they'll cling to anything. These people, if they are in relationships, don't see their partner as humans with all references to 'Wife changing money'. I watched Dan rehearse part of the script on twitch a while back, saying 'wife' instead of 'life' that casually was something he practiced for a while. It's very deliberate and I think it's a clever way to gesture at how messed up they are without doing a deep dive. I wish he had done that deep dive, but video was that long just to explain how divorced from reality they are. All the 'help my smooth brain' stuff was just, ugh.
I don't follow WSB or any of them actively. When the Roaring Kitty stuff blew up I was one of the people pointing out that he was a wealthy person in a finance related job and not the poor everyman in a basement everyone wanted to see because I know the basics of how to look stuff up online, but since then I tapped out. One thing I do see a lot in those spaces when they hit r/all or just show up in various places is the phrase 'Apes will be made whole', which is a reference to their belief that they will be the ones entitled to money when MOASS happens but it's also... how often they repeat that phrase just feels disturbing, like there is something else going on with how much they love that phrase
Yeah, the whole thing was very Lockdown Year Two, on the whole. I pay next to no attention to Reddit, so caught some of it the original go around second hand, and was mostly like, "sure, I guess?" I mean, fuck short trading, but reddit bros being smug about something is rarely a great sign. Then I guess I assumed it'd burn itself out, and everyone had gone off to spend their money or lick their wounds.
APPARENTLY NOT!
ETA: For the will be made whole, I know that's a legal term (we use it in union grievances all the time), but what it made me think of here is that bit about the "hole hearted to whole hearted" storytelling framework you were talking about a few weeks ago. Which is just really sad to think about.
ETA2 (sorry, dude): Does "wife changing money" mean that it's going to change the mind/happiness/personality/something else about the existing wife, or does it mean you change out the existing wife for a new wife?
People, and Netflix, painted it as one big push back against mean wall street, and that was never it. I wasn't even paying more than casual attention, except for when Roaring Kitty did a face reveal and just... yeah.
Yeah, 'made whole' is a legal term but how into it they are feels like... like birthright entitlement, like something akin to incel entitlement or white supremecist entitlement. Like the world didn't give them the power they should be entitled to.
Oh, 'wife changing' is all about upgrading the wife to a new model. No question. It's about having the money to access a female of higher social value.
