* Komani is back! To keep up to date with current gaming trends after being out of the game for so long, the new Silent Hill has a battle pass. I'm not kidding. This is so bad, I'm almost impressed.
* I am very confused about how the Nanowrimo website works these days. I thought you could post your project as you went? I am pretty sure it used to work that way? Poking it at, I found a place to put an excerpt, which is what I wanted to post. But I don't see how anyone can see the excerpt or summary? I will have to poke at this more, but I am very confused.
* I don't have a ton of words yet, but that is fine. I need to get my opening bit very polished before I can charge ahead. Also, I am still trying to finish that BG3 fic, which is definitely not a three chapter omegaverse story with 6k words done and about 2k to go before I can start doing editing passes. I rarely read omegaverse so I don't know what terms I should be using or other things. I know I can just make up whatever, but it's good to be well read in whatever genre you are writing in and I'm just not. I've tried to find a few good decent stories, but haven't found one I've clicked with yet. Every once in a while I click with an omegaverse story, but a lot of them just aren't for me. Though, I have very much clicked with this damn plot bunny, it seems.
I was supposed to finish Moonflower or the telepathy fic before Nano, but no... apparently I am working on this.
Also, last night my arms hit 'done with typing motions' so I drank a cider and watched a stream. Day 1 of Nano is a great time for your hands/arms to decide they don't want to interact with a keyboard. I need to do some yoga or something.

Date: 2023-11-03 06:58 am (UTC)From:Trying to write in a genre you're not familiar with is a very weird, intimidating experience. I recently found myself writing a soulmates fic, when I never actually read fanfiction about soulmates. I had fun writing it, but it was definitely disconcerting to feel like I was wandering blindfolded through all the conventions of the genre.
A commenter mentioned that 'The entire system of soulmates in this universe sounded oddly complicated at first for this kind of story', and I had to confess that I had no idea what I was doing; I was just trying to design a system that these particular soulmates could exploit to destroy each other.

Date: 2023-11-03 08:45 am (UTC)From:Yeah, I don't know if I am going to accidentally subvert the readers expectations or something. But, I don't know how to find the good stuff and just poking through the tags is rough. Also, there are terms I don't want to use and don't know if there is an established alternative. If there are good terms and tropes, I don't want to re-invent the wheel. It'll be more readable if I use expected terms.
Sounds like yours needed a lot more world building. Mine doesn't need much and a lot might not get referenced in the story.

Date: 2023-11-04 03:58 am (UTC)From:I don't believe there is a way to enter your words into the NaNo site anymore. I don't remember adding words as you went, but I do remember when I first joined that at the end of the month you had to paste in your whole story in order to verify the wordcount. It's just honor system now, ha.
When I click with an omegaverse fic, I often click very, very hard, but I click with relatively few. (It doesn't help that pregnancy is a squick for me, and that's a plot point that often goes along with the trope.) But when it works for me, it really works for me, haha. I hope you enjoy the one you're writing! Sometimes the plotbunnies simply will not be denied!
Ouch! I hope your hands and arms decide to be a bit more cooperative.

Date: 2023-11-04 05:06 am (UTC)From:Hrm, so I was confused about writers talking about getting discovered during Nano and it's not even browsable? I mean, I assumed those stories were exaggerations and something else was going on, but not by that much. There's nothing in-system? Ah, well, just wanted to make sure I was doing all the things.
Yeah, same, I click hard or nope. Also, I think a lot of newbie writers use it as a very strong format where attraction or character dynamics and other things are optional to do their first fic, so it's hard to even find grammatical stuff in some fandoms.
Thanks. Ironically, trying to complete projects before the first lead to me over working my hands, I think. Trying to balance resting and getting things done.

Date: 2023-11-05 01:19 am (UTC)From:It's possible that people post excerpts or drum up interest on the forums if that's still a thing - I don't think I've looked at the forums in years, so for all I know that's not so much a thing anymore either! I *think* a lot of those "discovered during NaNo" stories are a lot more "I cleaned up my NaNo story and submitted it the old-fashioned way, but phrasing it as 'discovered' is a good way to market this brand new writer." I know there've been a few fairly well-received novels (wasn't Legends and Lattes one?) that were NaNo projects in their first incarnations, and I think there ARE likely some agents and editors that may court NaNo participants... but I think those connections happen outside of the base NaNo site. Buuuuut I could also be wrong about how people have gone about it!
Yeah - it's a popular (if polarizing) trope, and it can allow for a lot of shortcutting with worldbuilding and characterization (leaning on the audience's previous experience with the trope to do the heavy lifting), so I've run into a lot of the same lack of general writing quality. A good writer can do some extremely fun things with it, though!
Ouch. I hope your hands feel better and you can get back to the right level of productivity. (But do take the time to rest!)

Date: 2023-11-05 08:37 am (UTC)From:Yeah, the way people talked about Legends and Lattes being discovered by people 'browsing' Nano projects just can't be true. Not surprised. My money is on him being in a well connected writer's group or something and he happened to do a Nano project.
People just love to build clickbait narratives around new authors, huh?

Date: 2023-11-06 05:41 am (UTC)From:(I'm still trying very hard to maintain optimism for the 2 remake and Townfall and ƒ... but oh, this isn't making it easier. Ascension always seemed like the weakest of the announced projects, but this is a LOW low.)
Yeah, that seems like a more likely thing. I do see that the forums at least still do *exist*, and so it's very possible that there's some valuable networking/promoting that happens there that I'm unaware of... but I think it's a lot more likely that he made his connections and used NaNo as a way to get a first draft banged out. And like, no shame in that, but it's not *quite* what's implied by "discovered via a NaNo project."
But boy are those kinds of clickbait narratives appealing, apparently.

Date: 2023-11-07 05:10 am (UTC)From:I remember having a fairly decent time with the forums, with some good advice and conversation threads and such, but that was... many years ago. I haven't looked at them since, just because I tend to already be so short on time during NaNo, I can't think about trying to do more!
My wordcount only looks good right now because I'd cheerfully decided to cheat from the start, and I've been making a lot of words via things other than my actual project, heh.
