* cohost will become read-only on Tuesday, October 1st. At this time, we will make best-effort attempts to keep the servers online through the end of 2024.

I'd comment but it would be a rehash of things I've said hundreds of time.

* More info on the state of grocery shopping in Portland than you'd ever want! The strikes are over, but the union has called for a boycott of Fred Meyer. Freddy's is huge up here, compare this to a boycott of Walmart plus those Walmarts with groceries... unless you aren't in the US and just, it's big. And over at Safeway - where I already can't shop due to how aggro their security is - a security officer killed a customer suspected of shoplifting.

My wrists suck. I have tendon damage that is likely from my older sister intentionally causing me pain for fun when I was a kid. I've had them looked at a few times and basically I need to baby them or wind up with chronic pain / reduced use of my hands. I also have an inured shoulder from being hit by a car. So, when I grocery shop I have a bag with a very padded shoulder strap. I have conventional re-useable grocery bags, but I can only carry things like bread and lettuce in them. Anything else, in the bag. Safeway wont let me carry a bag like that into most of their stores.

Safeway security has been getting more and more intense in the past few years. Some even have put in basically convenience stores inside their grocery stores where beer, medicine, baby stuff, etc goes to be watched more closely and has a separate check out... but due to layout issues you have to carry stuff past the normal check out which is what you DONT want to do if the store has serious security. It's a logistical problem that creates what looks like shoplifting from the POV of the door security.

When I could still use Safeway I wouldn't do self check out because the machines are so overtuned that they keep accusing me of pocketing items at the check out. Trust me, if I was going to pocket items in a Safeway it wouldn't be at check out with a camera in my face.

So, Safeway - I can't use self check out, the rate of people getting security in their face because of layout problems is nuts, I can't go in with my grocery bag and I also can't go in on a photowalk for a drink because I am not leaving my camera bag on the sidewalk. And now they'd killed someone and honestly it was just a matter of time. Shock, but not actually surprise, has been the reaction of a lot of people to this.

So, with some people not wanting to shop at our two biggest chains, that means more people in Market of Choice and other places I grab stuff. I went across town today for some shelf stable stuff to stock up and they were sold out of my brand, and with my dietary restrictions I cannot eat the other brands.

I'll be fine. I've just ordered a few things on Amazon to help tide me over. But what the fuck even is this shit? How is this the goddam future? This is just so dumb.

holy shit - I'd not heard of that death at safeway! I shop there, but only delivery, as I cannot manage the long trek around to get stuff, so it's been many years since I'd been inside one. there are definitely issues with delivery (I bitch about it often enough) but at least you're not in danger, except of stuff being out of stock

Once I finally remembered what the fuck cohost was, I was unsurprised at this turn of events.

Ugh, that shit sucks.

But really, fuck Safeway. That's all some garbage, but escalating to *fucking killing someone*?

The cohost thing is kind of a bummer - just because I would like a less-centralized internet and all - but I guess you can only mismanage/not manage your funds for so long. Not surprising at all.

Right? Employee safety should be enough to prevent any sort of escalated conflict. Shoplifting is also not a capital crime! The idea that someone was KILLED for it is just obscene and terrifying.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that cohost couldn't ever get it together, but you're right; it was a mess from the start, and never managed to collect itself at all.

I still haven't ever logged into the Pillowfort account I set up way back when they started. They've at least had it together better than cohost did, but it feels like they're perpetually on borrowed time. I at least get the sense they do *want* to improve from the early knowledge gaps and terrible enforcement, but as much as I want to like the idea of what they're supposed to be, it feels really hard to commit to a site I have shaky trust in.
