Weirdly, I don't have much of a migraine today. The lights were analog and mostly pointed at the band. I did have my eyes closed for the most part while taking the above video. I covered my eyes for the last song of the main set. But this is nothing compared to what happened to me from staying at one exhibit at the PDX Lights Festival too long trying to get a shot at an exhibit with laser lights.
Having known what the logistics would be like ahead of time would have helped immensely. I did try asking beforehand but no luck. I could have gotten a beer and stood in line with it, which is good partially because beer is calories and I basically would have had a snack I could have brought in.
The show was amazing. I had a great time, but knowing logistics and people being a little bit less shit would have been even more amazing. The girl next to me was also solo and trying to do the 'selfie with stage behind her shot'. A girl behind her was like 'let me help you' and took a bunch of pictures of her. I asked if she'd do one for me and she was very unhappy with the request and just took one without even like taking a second. I think she was just trying to hit on the girl next to me, but having a severe lack of pictures of me going places doing things is a long term bugbear of mine and, yeah, just would have been nice.
That people were into the opening band, Post Animal, which was a lot of fun. I hate it when people are tepid or there is forced enthusiasm. Some people knew the lyrics, were up and dancing during certain songs, etc. I didn't know that Post Animal is actually Joe's old band, and Djo is because he split off due to acting commitments. I felt like such a fake fan last night, yo. I was so impressed that vibes wise they were such a good match for Djo and then *facepalm* The girl next to me had tickets for all three nights and she said that on the first night of the tour people pretty much ignored the opener, so she was relieved to see people excited.
I only started listening to Post Animal three days ago to prep for the concert. I meant to do so beforehand but, I used to have time during weeks to do things? I don't know what happened.
I don't know why I fretted over what to wear. Someone cosplayed as Nancy from Stranger Things. At one point I was like 'oh that's the bassist from... no it's a guy cosplaying as the bassist for Djo...'
I am glad I didn't have my real camera. It was nice to just focus on real people making art right there, for us. I did grab some cellphone shots. As close as I was, I could have gotten insane pictures of Joe, but really my only photography regret is that the lens distortion on my cell phone makes it look like I am way farther away that I am.
I need to find a set list from last night. They did a lot of songs. Like, a lot. I've never been to a show that satisfying. Halfway through I was wondering what he was going to save for the encore.
The new album dropped the same day I went to the concert, so I'd barely had time to listen to a lot of the songs. The alternate composition for Potion for the live show was really good. If I could have gone repeatedly and could plan which songs to record that's one I'd have nabbed. I don't think I am going to click as much with Crux as I did with Decide, but it's a good album. Decide is just probably always going to be one of my favorite albums ever and has two of my favorite songs on it.
I may post again about Djo, but right now I a exhausted. I posted on Bluesky and someone was confused about me saying that Joe Keery is in a band, lol

I'm so glad to hear people were into the opener, because same: I hate when people are really tepid or in some cases even *trying* to be a bad audience. Like, how rude. I've often been unfamiliar with the openers at shows I've gone to, but sometimes I've discovered new-to-me bands that I end up absolutely loving!

But yeah, since Joe still works on Post Animal music and Post Animal works on the Djo 'solo' albums, they are a good pick! Tho some of the guys are doing two sets a night between PA and Djo

Date: 2025-04-16 03:53 am (UTC)From:That's true, too. Back in college I went to a Nightwish show (so... symphonic metal, very dramatic, operatic vocals, lots of electric guitar, big sweeping mythology and stuff) and the first opener was a local... hip-hop group? I think their name was Whole Wheat Bread. I don't know if they were a fill-in for someone who had to bail or what, but it was a TERRIBLE tonal mismatch. They were trying, and the audience was at least mostly polite, but it was just not the right scene in the slightest.
It sounds like the choice for this tour is perfect! Definitely likely to be a sound and style that the audience will appreciate. Though oof, long night for the guys playing in both sets!
